fences losing contents

Occasionally, with no apparent rhyme or reason, my computer will startup with all of the icons spilled back onto the desktop.  The fences are still present, just empty.  Any ideas why this happens and, more important, is there a way to reset the contents back to their folder without having to handle all the icons manually?

Under Configure Fences -> Tools -> Snapshots (Backups).. you can revert to when the icons were in the Fences. If you are using the free version and haven't taken a recent snapshot, you're better off sorting manually. Note that Fences Pro takes automatic daily snapshots.

Jeff is working on a new mechanism in Fences that should help with these issues.  We have finally been able to reproduce the scenario internally.
