Recommend a good turn based strategy game....

Hello. I'm looking for something to tide me over till elemental gets here. Something similar to elemental in gameplay (not style neccesarily). Also preferably something newish (like the last 3 or 4 years).

Thanks!

Hey Oranisagu, where can someone purchase Age of Wonders?  And is Shadow Magic the latest and or best of the bunch?  I think I remember being slightly interested in it but I was agog at the enormous price.  I don't remember if it was a collector's item or what but it was priced around $175.00.  I think I tried looking through digital distributors and couldn't find any that sold it.

Ebay is where I get them when I give my copy away to friends and need to add it to a new computer.

Yes in my opinion Shadow magic is the newest best of the official releases. But there is a modded version called Brave New World (the 3.2 version) that is super fun it really improves on the game play (solo). It is a bit imbalanced for multiplier but so is the "vanilla version" nothing the editor can't fix though

Another good place to find old games is amazon..

well, the where to find question seems to be answered perfectly. didn't think about that, I still have my AOW:SM box displayed in my book shelve ;-)

@Sweryd: the campaign was very doable. even though every enemies main city still had such an uber-monster with extremely high initiative (first to strike) which killed most lesser units with one hit (and yeah, this one hit usually was even against all targets).. ;-)

but: it wasn't necessary to kill the protector (I think that was its name) - most of the time the mission objective was something completely else and didn't involve such difficult fights..

anyway.. I mostly still went after them, for fun ;-) there were a few units with paralyze/stun/petrify skills and your hero could also have such an attack with the correct equipment. this, combined with a few buffs/debuffs before the fight was usually enough to kill a protector with minimal losses.. but yeah, saving was absolutely necessary, sometimes you're just out of luck and none of your units bring a stun in.. *g*
admittedly, it was easiest with the undead race because of the paralyzing-skeletons as well as the elder vampires which distributed the damage made as hit points to your allies.. this meant, your troops always had full health after a few quiet turns - which hopefully the paralyze provided. damn, I loved that party build in that game. 2 vamps, 2 skellies and the hero *g*

I just remembered another older tbs game: warlords. I personally didn't like it very much (I preferred the rts/rpg spin-off warlords battlecry - my favourite rts after total annihilation *g*) but it certainly had quite a few cool features =) warlords 4 should be the newest one.

Someone recently posted a link to a Warlords site that had information about all four games as well as downloads for 1 and 2.

I played quite a bit of Warlords on my old Laser 286..  great memories.

Impulse has King's Bounty Gold on sale for $15 down from $45.  You get both Kngs Bounty and Armored Princess.  Super deal!

No clue if this is what you had in mind, but I am currently getting to admire Frozen Synapse. Indie game, still in beta but can be played in multiplayer. Think simultaneous turn, very fast paced tactical game with neon graphics. Currently I feel like I am getting hooked.

Thanks GroWi - this actually looks like a pretty good game.  $25 for two copies and beta accessx2.  I'll bite.

Looks like a less-expensive game along the lines of Laser Squad Nemesis, but with some interesting twists. A pity LSN required a subscription, it would have been a fantastic game otherwise.

I'll just write out my favourite PC TBS games :)  There are a LOT of them for the console or PSP/DS though.

Like Final Fantasy Tactics series, Disgaea series, Fire Emblem series, Advance Wars series, etc..

Heroes of Might and Magic (HOMM) 3 & 5, King's Bounty

3 was the best of the series.  5 is the most recent offering.

King's bounty uses the exact same combat system, but doesn't have the kingdom building/management of HoMM.  Actually, king's Bounty the original game came out in 1990!  The ones that are out now are essentially remakes :)

Another interesting note is that both games were originally made by New World Computing.  For HoMM, the rights were sold to 3DO, who want bankrupt and sold the rights to Ubisoft.  For King's Bounty, it went to Russian developer 1C Company.

Both are RTS, but have a lot of TBS elements (and are among my favourite games):

- Kohan: Ahriman's Gift or Kohan II: Kings of War

- Sins of a A Solar Empire.

Turn based Strategy with Real time battles:

- King Arthur The Roleplaying Wargame

- Total War Series (I personally think the best one with the most mods is Rome Total War.  It went downhill from there, as the AI got dumber.)

Already mentioned

Battle of Wesnoth

Disciples 2

Civilization 4.

Age of Wonders II, Shadow Magic

Fantasy Wars, Elven Legacy

Dominions 3

Glad I'm not alone there. I was happy with the second Medieval, but in my opinion Rome remains the very best of them.

Okay so I looked up the demo for HoMM 5 and I remembered playing one of these games (not sure which one, probably 2 or 3) when I was younger and loving it, so I think ima give that a go. Before I buy it tho, can anyone confirm if it (and it's expansions) works with windows 7? The demo did, but I've seen stranger things happen before. thanks.

Edit: Also why does impulse only have the last expansion and nothing else? Whats up with that?

What about EU3?

Europa Universalis III isn't exactly turn based. It's a good game but not something that pops into my mind when I think turn-based.

Space Empires V with latest patches and Balance mod. Pretty deep game, especially good in PvP multiplayer, altrough AI is no longer that bad..

Well other than the obvious (any civ game)...Panzel General/Allied General, any of the Steel panthers.

- Kohan: Ahriman's Gift or Kohan II: Kings of War

I put a vote towards those too..Very good games

EU3 is slow enough to almost be considered turn based.  its the pace of Sins if not a little slower.

Those are RTS games, not TBS.
