Actually 'til gfx and text won't be separated in the engine...it's impossible to make proper gfx packs.
I don't know what you define as a 'proper' gfx pack, but I'm not looking at ascii anymore, and that's plenty proper for me.
1. You see weird symbols in the text.
2. You cannot create an image for all of the objects in the game.

^ As you can see, there is no "O" letter, it's been replaced with a symbol. The overland maps are full with letters and numbers, instead of graphical tiles...etc.etc.
However, it is definitely better than the basic ASCII "gfx", that is true.
