Internet Fail

So as of last night the internet connection at my college has gone down the tubes. For whatever reason it has been changed and now I lag in game.

I don't know if I will be playing much anymore because of this but perhaps it will get better over the next few days. I will check in periodically to see if the issue is resolved but I am not very optimistic.

Sorry fellas.

I tried to even chat with cow in vent... his connection would light up... he'd get like 1 word in, then he'd just broadcast noise.  I think it might be severely capped upload bandwidth.  Try running speed test and posting your results.

How do I do a speed test?

Here's cows

I'm actually not sure if the download is a problem.  The upload looks great to me, anyway.  Anyone else out there have any insight or thoughts?

you might be well served to move this to tech support cow.  if you click on edit, you can move the thread.

Yea that download speed is shocking, the upload is really good if it's just you using, but if it's being spread over an entire dorm or whatever things could start to get bad during peak usage hours.  The ping is also terrible, did you just press begin test to let the site choose the best server, or did you pick one yourself?

pingtest.net is another site that tells you a bit more about your connection then just speed.  It's quite similar but they'll give your line a grade when you're done.  I got an A!

I didn't know about ping test.  Thanks for mentioning.  Does anyone know from a technical standpoint if he's got theoretically got enough download bandwidth for DG?

That is a very, very bad download speed. I'd be shocked if that didn't cause problems with a game like Demigod. His upload speed is pretty darn good though, so something fishy must be going on with his ISP :P  (some sort of restriction on downloading)

pingtest.net was kind of an eye opener for me; i always thought that packet loss was rather common (hence packet switching), but I had 0% and it told me that anything over 0% is bad.

Good!!!

edit - NOT GOOOOOODD

There is no way on earth that demigod uses 1mb of bandwidth.  I'd guess it uses at most 0.05-0.1mb, even then that's a stratch since everyone runs their own sim so the only bandwith you are going to use is for location and action updates.  It should use more like 0.01mb.

What's more likely happening is either:

1) your school implimented a new throttling/sharing setup and someone in your dorm is wtfpwning the torrents (unlikely that this would kill your connection unless they are throttling by building instead of IP which would be retarded) or

2) there is a bad router someplace or

3) you have a trojan and someone is running a porn server out of your box

To test 2/3 download a traceroute program that lets you log activity and run it for 24 hours.  Maybe ping lagwars vent (although i read something was wrong with that recently) so just ping someone who plays dg (like pacov!).

If you can't figure out what the traceroute means post it here.

cow - let's try a quick 1v1 an see what we get if you haven't tested already

I think it was on the schools end because over the weekend it seems to have fixed itself.

Back up to a 33mb/s download and a 10ms ping.
