Elemental: March Beta FAQ

image

Greetings! It’s that time again where I try to answer some of your questions regarding Elemental, the beta and more.

Q: When is BETA 2 scheduled to start?

A: Beta 2 is the Multiplayer beta of Elemental. We still have quite a bit of work to do in order to have it in a state where it can be provided to the external beta players.

It was originally scheduled for March 18th but has been pushed back to a new tentative date of April 1st.

Q: What sort of multiplayer will BETA 2 have?

A: The initial beta will be very focused on just 1 on 1 MP matches in order to test out the matchmaking. There won’t be custom games in the initial BETA 2.  Instead, a player will logon to the Metaverse, press “find game” and be matched with another player.  The objective will be to see how well the system works as well as kill off any connectivity issues early.

Q: Will BETA 2 be fun?

A: Actually, it should be reasonably fun by that point.  It will be the first update that actually attempts to have some basic balancing in it and enough gameplay elements enabled that the game should start to come together.

Q: What changes from the current public beta do you see (in terms of game play) in Beta 2?

A: We are working to implement the feedback being posted by the beta group. A LOT of that feedback comes in the following areas:

  • Cleaned up economics. We want to eliminate the “black box” effect that users have discussed at length.  Hence, cities will no longer provide any innate money, research, or spell points. That will come from what you build.
  • A lot more city improvements. Right now, early in the game, there isn’t enough to do. There will be a lot more choices on what to build in order to give players more strategic directions to go into.
  • The Dynasty system will be updated such that players can negotiate whose family off-spring goes into rather than females going to the other family and males staying in your family.
  • The game mechanics will be a lot clearer in game. By BETA 2, a player shouldn’t feel lost on what they’re doing. Thus a lot of UI changes are being worked on.

Q: Elemental’s economic system seems to change a lot. Why is that?

A: The biggest reason is to test modability. We expect Elemental to allow players to construct their own economic system in mods. The only way to make sure we’re not hard-coding things into the source is to try out different systems.  To put it in RTS terms, modders should be able to make mods that change the economic engine to be like Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander or like Warcraft/Starcraft.

The other reason is that as we play the game and listen to players, we get ideas on how the game should be played or what is more fun.

Q: What about stability, crashes, memory?

A: This is another requirement prior to beta 2.  For Beta 2, basic memory usage and stability have to be taken care of.

Q: Are there any other blockers?

A: Yes. Beta 2 won’t go out until we feel it is not just technically solid but as a game it is starting to feel like a game and not a tech demo.  The beta 1 series is more like an “alpha”. That is, very very early in the game’s development. The objective has been to talk to players about game mechanics ideas with players having a point of reference.  And from that, we’ve been able to (as beta testers have undoubtedly noticed) make pretty dramatic changes based on that feedback.

Q: Will there be any other beta releases BEFORE Beta 2?

A: Maybe. We are considering having a build that implements more of the game mechanics and such and then have beta testers vote on whether they believe the game is ready for Beta 2.

I know you release builds in Thursdays but... seriously?

Let's hope for a prior release that actually allows us quests and (recruitable) heroes. Please?:pout: This is supposed to be Beta 1G!

Quests are in beta 1G.  Damsel in distress for instance along with a few others that pop up if you research adventure techs.

At the moment, they don't.

Even if you research what you need, and I tried to build every building I could (pub, inns, etc.)

What are the requirement for damsel in distress? Researching all exploring tech?

Okay, yea ... quests currently don't seem to be working, at least not on my computer. Also, can't build workshops or half the other buildings, or Recruit heroes. I know its not implemented yet, but I think we should have an update or something with a more fleshed out game to test before we jump into multiplayer.

Maybe a couple more tool tips, reduction of noob traps, ect.

its basicly the alpha not really a beta yet... should be a "beta 3" and it would look nice to but they want to make sure multiplayer works and that the game is stable, having some one drop out randomly would be no fun now would it? its really up to stardock on how it gets done unless some one has a wmd pointed at they're hq. :jafo:

Yay!  Thanks Stardock!

I've researched a lot of adventure techs in my games, I've yet to see a single quest.

I've also not been able to recruit any heroes, these are both things I've been FOCUSED on testing. I've not seen anyone else having posted in the forums about being successful with it either.

So you might want to double check that they actually are working int he public beta. Then it would be nice to know how to reproduce it so we can actually test those systems which we're supposed to.

I know this is completely random, but did anyone else literally laugh out loud at the opening screen that Frogboy put together?  It harkened back to the old King's Quest days in the 80s...  Or maybe I'm just the only one old enough to get the humor.  Well, Frog and I, anyway.  Anyway, good times!  :D  Nice touch.

man i loved that intro even though i never played games that old, to bad there not going to keep it after the beta. X|

If you say that, I assume you didn't play the older version of the game

Because the first first first beta had an opening movie really... interesting.

What are the goals for Beta 2?  Connectivity?  Balance?  This all seems premature but then again I'm not the expert.  However, I would like to know how I can help.  What should we focus on in Beta 2?

Some work on stability is good news. Elemental doesn't stay running long enough to complete a custom Sovereign for me... I can't do much testing of actual gameplay presently.

cheers,

Kul

Do what I do, save the game exit and reload about every 20 - 25 turns.

You can load save games? :P

@stardock:   PLEASE fix more of what was supposed to be in beta 1g.  You'll get a lot more feedback on HOW things work and what little improvements to make if they work AT ALL, and the game will stay up long enough for us to get to them.

@everyone Tridus & econumgrum:  I think you can USUALLY load if the game wasn't too close to crashing when you saved.  Autosave every 3 turns meant that it was ALWAYS too close, so I changed it to autosave at the maximum 25 turns, and now the previous autosave SOMETIMES works (but not my current campaign, alas).

And I can't get quests or reqruit heroes either.  Nice to know I'm not the only one.

I am considering pre-ordering, is it still the case that we get access to the beta if we do so?

I'm seriously going mad looking at the calender waiting for release...

Yea Filthgrinder.  Stardock will let you into next phase of Beta if you preorder and check appropriate box.  However, they only will allow you in when they are ready to open next phase of testing.  That date can shift due to schedules, etc.  So if you preorder now you will have access to beta, just not immediately.  To be honest, I would never preorder any software unless I knew 100% that I truly want it and can take all the bugs that will be shipped with it.  For me, this is that product.

This is the only game I have ever, preordered.  Probably the last also(unless the whole process that Stardock is creating with their development is so enjoyable that I have to again).

I think Stardock is trying to improve the development process as a whole; and, are trying to emulate Blizzard in the care and attention to detail by releasing a bug free solid game.

The release date is currently a tentative Sept. 1, 2010.  That release date can change many times.
