Do pirates ruin 1v1 single player?

I'm somewhat new to SoaSE and have been playing single player 1v1 vs the AI on hard.  What seems to ruin all my games are pirates.  Just when I think I have the upperhand and the game is going my way I start getting bombarded with HUGE pirate fleets.  There seems to be only luck in determining if I can hold the fleet off, as the comp will out bid me every single time and the only way I can get the pirates on him is if I up my bid at the last second before the auction closes.

I've thought about removing them entirely from the game but then I feel like I am just wussing out.

What do you guys think and play with?

Turning off pirates is perfectly normal; most multiplayer gamers play without them.

Pirates were ridiculously weak prior to the Diplomacy expansion pack, so weak in fact that most players considered them little more than free experience for their capital ships.  Unfortunately, pirates overshot the middle ground when they were buffed and landed themselves in the territory of ridiculously powerful.  I do not blame you at all for wanting to turn them off.

Another issue is the experienced player and beginner player dynamic.  I can often have 5 or 6 superweapons operational by the 2-hour mark, in addition to a massive fleet and starbases on all my front lines.  If I get this far, an AI opponent is pretty well hopeless.  Pirates need to be that much stronger to actually threaten me, but what's threatening to a seasoned veteran like me is gamebreaking to someone learning to play.

I don't blame you at all for turning off pirates, and in fact that's probably for the best while you're learning the game.

Do you ever play single player 1v1 AI or is that no challenge?  I'll take your suggestion and turn them off until I feel I know the game better.

I've been playing TEC and I can only seem to counter the AI when I get the healing ship the TEC come with.

If you mean the Robotics Cruiser, then you have very quickly discovered one of the most important ships for the TEC. No other faction gets such an easy to deploy and efficient repair cruiser, and virtually all good TEC players use a fair amount of these in their fleets.

And yes, turning off the pirates is a perfectly fine way to play the game. I even had them off in Entrenchment most of the time just because I didn't like to bother with them. The only reason I'd keep them is if you are playing for a diplomactic victory, but if you are still wanting practice with military victories deffidently keep them off.

How does the diplomatic victory work with the pirates in a 1v1 AI situation?  I was about to win my first game on hard and the damn AI won diplomatic, I could not figure out what happened.

I personally really enjoy pirates.  It makes me feel like my starbases are worth something (because a starbase + couple of hangers + repair bay) can hold off all but the very strongest pirate fleets (and then it will give you PLENTY of time to get your fleet back.  usually only a capital ship or 2 will be enough to turn the balance just because of the mixed priorities when the pirates are trying to decide what to shoot)

Not to say that my starbases arn't worth anything normally.  But like my homebase is very rarely attack because I plant a starbase just outside my homebase... pirates will run right past the one outside my homebase though, and hit up my capital (or whatever they plan to attack) and the home-base starbases that I load up with trading bays and stuff get to be something other than a really expensive trade port for more than just the early game.  (and if I'm in trouble, and the other players actually do push back to my home-base.. which they do sometimes, my planet is well defended because I've built up anti-pirate protection over time)

I have encountered rage inducing moments where I want to scream because pirates seem to time their attacks with everytime I'm ready to push the offensive.

on the side note, you can fight to outbit AI players.  They seem to always have spare cash early on, but later I tend to have more raw credits to spare (I usually abuse tradeports, so my credit to other resources tends to be on the heavy side, giving me plenty to spare)

Also, the pirate influence techs may not seem like a waste much, but they do make a difference, especially in 4+ player games because I've tested with auto saves if they actually effect enemy choices, and they do.   Because they will delay attacks or defenses to planets (it you time your attack with a pirate raid)
