new multiplicity update broke it for me

so i uninstalled and then installed the update through impule to MP today.  now the machines won't connect.  in the past you could sometimes use the reinstall_mpp_service.bat to fix the problem, but that doesn't work with the new version, tells me directory not found or path not found, don't really remember.  anyways, what can i check?

Why did you uninstall first?

Did you reboot after uninstalling?

i uninstalled first because impulse said it had to uninstall the previous version first.  i updated one PC, and it could still connect to the second PC, then i updated the second PC, and it stopped working altogether

Are you installing MP or MP Pro?

You should not have to uninstall the old version before installing an update which makes me think Impulse thinks you have switched product.

and it definately sees the other machine, if i disable the firewall, it instantly tells me it can't connect, if i enable the firewall, it takes a while before it tells me that.  very strange

well, it should be MP Pro i'll have a quick look and see what it did

yep, both machines are showing MP Pro.

ok, well, i dunno what to do now, i rely on this app throughout the day and not sure what i'm going to do.

My impulse is also saying I must uninstall the previous version before I can install the 2/18 release.  I've never had to do that, so I am going to wait on this update a bit based on this thread.  I'm running MP Pro and impulse says "previous version installed" in the main window.

i seem to remember there being 2 processes for multiplicity running, now i only see Multipl.exe, and there is no service for it that i can see either.

man, for some reason there are no archives in my folder either, crap i can't even restore it this totally sucks.  it even asked me if i wanted to create the archive, only an impulse and windowblinds archive in there, WTF man

If you open services, do you see Stardock Multiplicity listed?

Also have you rebooted since you installed?

yes ive rebooted, nope, no stardock multiplicity service installed, on either machine, as i said before this happened in the past as well, and must of been common since there was that BAT file to reinstall the service, but that doesn't work with this version, either that or this install isn't complete

ok, no response in a while, is it possible to locate an older version so i can install that at least and hopefully get it working again?

Is this a 32 or 64 bit install?

There should be a multisrv32.exe or multisrv64.exe in the Multiplicity folder.  Is it there?

Just check this on a secondary, not on the primary.

the secondary is 32bit win7, primary is 64bit win 7.

secondary has multisrv32

primary has multisrv 64

now i notice that it no longer installs to program files/stardock/thinkdesk/multiplicity, it goes to startdock/multiplicity

From an elevated command prompt, you can run multisrv32.exe -install (or the multisrv64.exe as appropriate) and that'll force the service to install. Might want to run a -uninstall first in case its gotten some of the info written to the registry and what's half-there is blocking it taking successfully.

Had the same problem with the impluse update for MP Pro. When I run MP from impluse it shows I'm connected to each machine until I try to go to that machine and then I get protocol error. It will not install the update unless you uninstall the previous version. When I attempt to go to my link to download the program outside of impluse ( req my serial number's ) I'm told Invalid host. Everytime their is a update to MP I go thru this. Once it's working it's the greastest thing since sliced bread, but when it's not you really Hate it.

Reinstalled MP from my serial number link and was able to get it to work on the one machine, will do same on the other machines in the morning.

Had that happen to me also, 1st time Impulse wanted me to uninstall a previous version (MP Pro here). After several restarts and reconfiguration of the primary/secondary roles it now works as usual. Win 7 64bit here on primary and 2 secondaries.

For those who are prompted to uninstall and reinstall, is this on the primary, secondary(ies), or both?

Multiplicity needs the service running on any secondaries to connect.  If you don't see a service running on your secondaries, first try what Nakor posted above.

I was prompted to uninstall on the secondary.

Note that Multiplicity has now failed utterly for me on these two machines.  I've even uninstalled the 1.24 beta, turned off prereleases in impulse, and went back to 1.22 on both machines...no luck.  Multiplicity is deader than Duke Nukem right now.  8(

EDIT:  Today's 2/22 non-prerelease 1.22 version solved the problem for me, but I had to turn off "Show Prerelease Versions" to get this version.

What irritates me a bit :

MPC 1.24 beta is up and running on this machine (primary, updated via Impulse). It shows uninstalled and 'previous version installed' ?

What version is Impulse saying is available for you?

1.24[beta]. I will do a complete un- and re-install and see what happens.
