I found this nice hdd test program called Crystal Disk mark:

I took it for a drive, and got these scores:

X-25m:

   Sequential Read :  238.817 MB/s
  Sequential Write :   86.588 MB/s
 Random Read 512KB :  170.613 MB/s
Random Write 512KB :   86.189 MB/s
   Random Read 4KB :   21.700 MB/s
  Random Write 4KB :   58.070 MB/s

         Test Size : 100 MB
              Date : 2010/02/17 0:12:06

seagate 7200 rpm:

Sequential Read :   62.959 MB/s
  Sequential Write :   56.911 MB/s
 Random Read 512KB :   32.822 MB/s
Random Write 512KB :   30.712 MB/s

Very nice.

 

I'm writing this from a Thinkpad X40 that I just put in a 32 GB SSD and it has revitalized it. A 5 year old machine is now perfectly useful today.
