@morph- yes, the new Steam is VERY much an improvement over the old one.
Ironically, today Osmos (a cool indie game) came out on Impulse; one less game I have to tie the knot with Steam for.
Still plenty of others though.

Morph: There is in-game money you get from loot, and zen-type money you buy and activate online with a credit card or through prepaid cards some gas stations sell. Not sure which ones, I'll look later. In game coins are fairly common, and prices aren't TOO bad, but you won't be getting a surplus of coins till around level 25ish.

Yeah, exactly like BoI. Just wanted to make sure of that. Its kinda annoying, because you have to pay some money, in order to get more ZEN, so you can be competitive and get really good. Hmm....free game....not so much 
But I guess they have to make some money somehow, because the game is free to play

Yeah, having to have Steam running in the background is a real bummer. It is a bit better now though, since you don't have to pull up the games tab to choose the game, you can just right-click the tray icon and select from one of your recently played media/games.
I don't think Brad will bring the on you, since he uses Steam and like Steam quite a bit himself. And in just a few weeks, I will finally have "DAWN OF WAR II". Then I will truly be ]I[Kaen-II- (which, when expanded is= Inquisitor Kaen of Dawn of War II).

There's also an in-game trade system. about 800,000 coins will buy 1 zen, and the things that cost zen, I've never seen anything over 25, and usually it's more like 5 zen to buy something.

And Snipe...Basically, everyone who posts here regularly has a guaranteed spot in my faction. And the next two who join will be made Marshals(3rd tier down from leader of the faction) Skidi got there first so I made her Director.
