AI too hard!

AI too hard!

ive never had this problem before.

i tried a new game, on normal.

i got CRUSHED. huge waves of enemies swarming at my planets.

so i tried a smaller game, on easy.

same thing, but the swarms occured a bit later than on normal.

scenario:

i have 3 capital ships, 2 kol, one akkan, and about 30 frigates, and a starbase.

the advent invade with at first 3 capital ships and 10 frigates. at first i seemed to do well, but out of the blue another two capital ships come, and an enemy starbase begins to construct itself in my starwell.

i retreated, only losing my akkan, while i rest and rearm in my neighboring planet. but i must ask, what is with the AI in diplomacy? im tempted to go back to entrenchment. at least the AI was resonable back then.

and in entrenchment, the first 2 difficulties were a breeze. i got challeges from hard and up.

"easy" shouldnt mean huge waves of enemy capital ships.

i have the feeling that the developers are trying to force us to use diplomacy.

so some point recently apparently the ai got buffed in a few areas that makes my turtle strategy not very effective anymore.

the ai uses its armor regen abilities effectivly to cancel out my metor swarm, and now they hit planets they are attacking with super weapons to disable my defenses at the right time instead of just random.

im dissapointed honestly, i enjoyed defending against huge waves, and now i cant do it anymore. never thought i would comlain about an ai being too good but there it is

I think a smarter, more human like AI (which it's still pretty far off from) is not something to complain. But that's just my opinion.

I did not have this problem. I can't exactly go cruel, but I can easily take anything Unfair and below with ease.

Any time I go above Unfair though, it's just insane. I seriously can't seem to find a strategy that works... except build a map big enough that the computer doesn't find you until you've got a formidable defense up... and even then the superior numbers are in the extremes that they overwhelm starbases.

Edit:  Turtle strategy works VERY well in diplomacy... at least for Advent. I noticed someone mentioning them using health regen to lessen the impact of meteor swarm. There's a few things to note about star bases, the Advent in particular.

Here are the upgrades you should get in this order for starbases that are defending primary targets of the computer:

1: Hitpoints

2: Hitpoints

3: Attack

4: Attack

5: Hitpoints

6: Meteor Swarm.

7 and 8 can be used however, but it's important that those be purchased in that order. That will wipe out just about any fleet with 1 major exception: A fleet containing 20+ Anti structure frigates. In this case, begin throwing everything you can at those frigates.

Other than that, this will wipe out massive fleets, and allows for effective turtle strategies. If you're not maxing out both hitpoints AND Attack power, and trying to rely solely on the power of meteor swarm, you can kiss your starbase goodbye. You must also max out shield, armor and hitpoints in the tech tree too. I also like to place a pair of regen platforms next to the starbase along with a full complement of hangar defenses. With all the defenses lumped together, it becomes impossible for them to fully deactivate the shield regeneration, and the weapons of the starbase eliminate most of the frigates that try to break away to target them. In short, nothing short of massed anti structure frigates can break it. Even then, it becomes a serious task for the computer to break through. If you're turtling properly, they have to do that at each and every planet they try to conquer... and it becomes massively costly. They'll lose more than 5 times what they destroy.

Those of you advising "build more frigates" I counter with build none at all. In fact, most games against the AI, I mop the floor with them by building not a single frigate the entire game... except a few scouts for demining worlds I conquer. I don't even use colony ships. My first cap is a progenitor, then I pop out 2 halcyons. That takes me all the way to the enemy. Then I build a starbase at my most viable choke point, wait for them to attack, then build 1 of each of the rest of the capital ships. This fleet of 6 capital ships goes out and slaughters planets. By the time I attack, my flagship (the progenitor) is level 6, so even if I lose a capital ship, it can be resurrected. Max out hitpoints and shield and the fleet is pretty much invulnerable. Those six ships have taken out fleets of about 100 ships without even having their shields punched through. Duplicate that fleet and have it join the first later on. At that point, not even fully maxed starbases will be a problem.

Plug Puller

Win the game by yourself against at least one Hard AI player.

Toaster Roaster

Win the game by yourself against at least two Hard AI players.

Comp Stomper

Win the game by yourself against at least three Hard AI players.

Actually HAL, I can do that.

Win the game by yourself against at least four Hard AI players.

Go Big or Go Home

Win the game without building any Frigates, Cruisers or Corvettes. You will probably need Capital Ships for this! (Not achievable with Quick Start.)

All in one game. :p

If you aren't worried about competitive play, play some mods. Hell of a lot more fun than the base vanilla trin/reb stuffs.

I agree, you can spam cap ships and devastate the enemy AI. When I did it I used Advent because they had the most squadrons per cap ship but you can use whoever. As was already mentioned don't form any alliances (shouldn't matter if the enemies are allied or not though which means you can make it a FFA or you vs 4 AI)
