A new dark Theme for WinCustomize

A new dark Theme for WinCustomize

First alternative theme for WinCustomize - a skin for our skinning site.

http://userstyles.org/styles/25121

Hi

Have you ever wished there would be some alternative themes for our beloved site?

Most likely you did, after all we all love skinning and using alternative themes for our applications.

Not sure if you know already, but there is a way to skin websites, it's called "Stylish" for Firefox.

Stylish is an Add-on for Firefox that let's the user apply various styles to existing websites.

There are many styles (themes) for popular sites such as Google, Facebook etc.

It's one of the coolest Add-ons I know that let you style your web, quite futuristic.

The paradox is, there is no theme for Wincustomize, our beloved site that is one of the biggest skinning communities.

Well, there wasn't until today.

I took the mission to make the first alternative dark theme for WinCustomize and Wincustomize Beta.

It's optimized mostly for the beta site but works on both so when the beta will become the main site it'll work the same.

To use it you'll need to install Stylish add on for Firefox from here -  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108

Then to apply the style, just one click on "Install with Stylish" here -  http://userstyles.org/styles/25121

Hope you'll enjoy it,

comments are welcome.

I had tried this when it first came to light. It stayed workable for all of two hours then it stopped skinning both the home page, forums, everything. I had to uninstall it to get FF back to normal. That was about a month ago. Haven't gone back to it since.

Please try again, it has just been updated & is working very nicely. Anyway it cannot do any harm so give it a chance.Sure that it cannot effect your Firefox to go out of normal state, it's only a script that is active inside Wincustomize and deals only with style definitions.

I'm using it from the beginning and never encounter any bug, it always skinned as it should.

Anyway, please try again and let me know how it goes, if there are bugs I'll do my best to fix them if you'll give some info.

Okay ... so I went back to it. Found out why it didn't work. One of the themes I was running, also a dark theme, doesn't play nice with userstyles. Uninstalled that and applied the WC Dark Theme with a different theme for FF itself. So far so good.

UPDATE: The style has been updated, more use of gradients in the code (as can be seen in the screenshot on top), additional improvements in the forum design, more gradients and cleanup.

Feedback is appreciated.

Enjoy the alternative style of WC!

update: The style have been updated.

More use of gradients, this time in the footer. Rounded corners in the content area and alignment of the left and right parts. Further compacting of the whole design.

It's very easy to apply the skin if you use Firefox: Install Stylish and apply the style.

Lava Fox Purple! Just now put it up. In a word ... perfect! I especially like the wall. Where can I get it? There is one thing though. I have AVG's tool bar. The search pane is rather thin. You can't see clearly what you type in there. Left side under Getting started.

Really cool Ziggy!

Thanks Fred!

Lava Fox Purple! Just now put it up. In a word ... perfect! I especially like the wall. Where can I get it?

Thanks Uvah! The wall is actually a Stylish userstyle that I wrote to apply the wallpaper (it's the only way to do so in Firefox).

Get it here: http://userstyles.org/styles/18534

I have AVG's tool bar. The search pane is rather thin. You can't see clearly what you type in there. Left side under Getting started.

Sorry about the bug, unfortunately I cannot test it at my system (I use ESET). Please visit the support forum of LavaFox, you can email me through the link there or through my site.

I can think of some code that may fix it, if you'll test it, we could fix it together.

By the way Uvah, I see in your screenshot that you're using an older version of the Wincustomize skin, you can update it through Stylish or at this link.

Thanks. Went to the page, saw the update and clicked on it. A few seconds later another page comes up and says install. I moused over it, nothing. I opened my browser and checked for updates and it came back no updates available. It didn't change.

ZigBoom ...... went there to view the wall. Turned out to be a screenshot so I went to the theme gallery, chose LavaFox purple, saved the page as html then opened a 700x6 something image in XNview and resized it to fit my screen. I hope you don't mind. I can't show it because of copywright issues. Unless of course I have your permission. It is one helluva nice wallpaper. There is this though. Something is missing.

Hi Uvah,

Sure I don't mind you using the wall, if I understand which one I'll send it to zou in full size. Do zou mean the lava ball wall? The one that appears inside the emptz tab, right? The link I sent is to the Stzlish userstyle that'll put it in everz empty tab in the theme, try it...

I notice some oddities in your screenshot, not just the missing part, something must be conflicting. Email me and we'll fix some bugs and I'll send you the wall in full size.

I've got the wall up now. It was easy resizing it from the original. Made sure to keep the ratio the same to avoid distortion. One of the things I learned coming here. As for the oddities all I see is the search pane for AVG and there is something else too. Downloads ... the small dialogue box that comes up to confirm it ... on the right the word cancel isn't sitting squarely in its background. Its below it half in half out. If I can get a screenshot of it I'll post it here. And thanks for the wall. You should put them up. Make for a really good collection.

How do I go about uninstalling this dark theme?

Here's an interesting question. Why does my mouse continually flash when I mouse over the quick launch button? It keeps flashing 'open quick launch' over and over.

Hi Uvah, I noticed other oddities, the gradient is missing in the URLbar & Searchbar (You can see in my screenshots there's a gradient). It's not big deal but suggests some conflict in your system.

About the quick launch button, that's part of the Windows theme, I would try to change it (but it looks like you're using the default Win7), maybe it's the cursor?.

Try disabling all add-ons if the problem seems to be related to Firefox (then enable one by one to see which one creates problems). I suggest also to install Firefox Beta, a clean install may fix some issues (you could create a new profile for it. Anyway FF4Beta is very cool!

Anyway, I can fix the AVG toolbar if you'll email me, I'll write some code that you could test..

Sargan, it's easy to install through Stylish, if you're using Firefox 3, you'll find it in the Add-ons panel, or right-click the Stylish icon in the status-bar / manage styles.

Sorry to hear you like to uninstall, there's a totally redesigned version coming up, I'll upload it now and attach some screenshots, maybe you'll like to try before you ununstall...

UPDATE: A major re-design of the theme. A clean minimalistic look, more use of gradients & special text-glow effects for hover state.

Here it is, hope you'll like the new style.

To use the skin you'll need to install Stylish add on for Firefox from here -  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108

Then to apply the style, just one click on "Install with Stylish" here -  http://userstyles.org/styles/25121

Comments are welcome,

Enjoy!

UPDATE: Restyling of the header Login using a gradient that's made from pure code (on the upper-right corner of the screenshot).

New use of a new capability of Firefox is the text glow effects that are applied in the title (as you can see in the screenshot) and as hover states for links.

Feedback is welcome, give it a try if you're using Firefox and you'll see WC in a new way...

If you're using the skin, you can check for updates through Stylish.

Enjoy!

There seems to be a little problem.

I had to turn it off. I'm going to uninstall and go back to the old one. No update!

How do I uninstall it anyway. There isn't an option for it that I can find. I want the old one back.

Uvah, there's definitely a bug on your system, probably an add-on that creates an error, I see small errors also in the Firefox Theme (no gradient on URLbar & SearchBar, that's a very rare bug that I've never seen before.

I'm curious, what is the add-on that displays the "blocked 1 of 1" ? What does it block?

Anyway, if you'll disable all add-ons & try, the bugs will be probably gone.

Then you should enable them one by one & see which one creates the problems.

If you like to uninstall, just go to Stylish (Tools/ Add-ons/ User Styles) & disable or remove the Style.

This won't fix all the bugs, there's definitely something wrong on your FF configuration, I can see it in the way the theme is rendered. I could help to fix it & the toolbar if you like to, but first you should try to disable all add-ons & see what happens.

UPDATE:

Some minor bug fixes.

If you're using it, you can update through Stylish or through this link: http://userstyles.org/styles/25121

If you're not using it, give it a try ... it's the only alternative theme for WC, very easy to install if you're using Firefox.

You'll only need to install Stylish Add-on for Firefox that will allow you to skin various websites (Google, Facebook etc.)
