rating system

i still think the rating system should be scrapped (as it was said it was going to be) because its just being abused currently by people who get their sick thrills out of downgrading skin ratings.........

I wondered if that could be done, because I had a screen get a pretty good rating from the mods when it was posted in the gallery and two days later I noticed it was half a star less. I thought I'd gone nuts and imagined that extra half!

Try going from five stars to one in less than an hour. You haven't lived til you experience that thrill. Count your downloads:meow:   and let the petty have their fun!

I agree, but still this shouldnt be happening though.

My understanding is that the rating system is going to go away with the new site. The sooner the better. I think to much focus is put on it (myself included) and we all need to get back to the real reaon we do this...for the fun and love of it.

:meow:  Yes Po, I do agree but it really is hard to feel much love when you are maligned without even being told why. I just look at the downloads and let them eat cake!>_>

I know why I skin, but sometimes I wonder why I upload.  Just 3 days ago, I was having a skinning existential crisis (am I uploading to "give back" to the community, or am I uploading, fishing for positive strokes, or worse yet, jumping through hoops to be an attention whore).  If the reason I'm uploading is to give back, then having a skin's rating see-saw all over the place seems either insulting or an act of stupidity/masochism.

While I agree and I have been there and probably will be there again it's not worth the energy to get worked up about it. I'm looking at 4 proven, recognized, and accomplished skinners whose work speaks for itself. And it just keeps getting better.

Though it stings at the time I firmly believe that what goes around comes around and negativity has a way of coming around threefold.

Aren't we all reduced to being three years old and hoping this one is good enough to make the refrigerator door? We struggled with getting approval from the moderators when we start. And when we are rejected we try harder. Because you want it in the gallery. You want it to be seen by everyone. And then you wait and watch to see how many more people accept what you've put out there. Then, when you get that acceptance and good feedback you rush to create more. Because it feels good and because you love to create.

Don't let one or two ruin it for you. You're forgetting the 'thousands'----tens of thousands----hundreds of thousands---who have already embraced what you put out there from your heart.

Sort of a 'rite of passage' when it comes to skinning....or it's 'Skinning 101'....;)

People have skun [old word - still wrong] like that since Day One.

Nothing will change....not really...;)

I say keep it up...I sell Prilosec and Ativan for a living. The rating system is great for biz.  ;)

Sydney Freedman, M.D. said it best, "You know, I told you people something a long time ago, and it's just as pertinent today as it was then. Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice - pull down your pants and slide on the ice."

Yay BoXXi!

gotta agree with this, go by the count if you want a good idea how the blind is being accepted. I had a dust up with the "in crowd" and had a blind drop two stars over night, surprise. If I hit 5K downloads I'm happy but I would guess that most of yours are in the tens of thousands downloaded, looks good from here.

"let them eat cake?" only if made from pig entrails and cow dung.

The above says it all. Everyone on this post and many more of you community members you all know what you do for us.
The rating as it is now means nothing. If there has to be any system at all than all the work should be listed only by the mods at the time of being accepted and not be permitted to change.

If you have been following some of the forum post lately many are from a certain group and I will leave it at that. They appear to be looking for things that wouldn't appeal to most of them so when they download a very good skin they rate it low because it not something they want. All you have to do is delete it and it's that easy to get rid of.  So for the people that worry about the stars going down don't. You work is getting download and use by many and I (we) don't want to lose any of you. I think I speak for most and want to let you know you are very appreciated.

That's not as easy or simple as you make it sound, Boxxi.  (Or maybe I just need some of that Ativan that Doc is selling).  I can have fun skinning -- that's not the issue.  The issue is what happens to my fun when some b@st@rd takes a leak on my sandcastle.  That's not so fun anymore.

why rating should be anonymous as it is now ? look as example  the Firefox Addons site the stars are right togheter each comment  WWW Link ... just my two cents...

That certainly would put some responsibility on the shoulders of the people doing the rating!  (and it would be a lot easier to disregard the drive-bys).

i second this, this would deffinatley stop the 'snipers'   as for the ratings system being gone, brad reckons its still going to be on the new site,....last i heard, unless he has changed his mind and its really gone now.

I've been through it all a thousand times karen, I know how it feels, believe me.

But, through the years I have learnt.........

A: You aren't going to change anything

B: Have Fun!

Easy resolve... totally ignore the ratings like I do.  They are useless and mean nothing to a true skinner.  ;)

Guess I had better define "true skinner" so no one takes offense.  Merely means someone who skins to please themelves and to heck with every one else.

Possibly, but then folks could not truely vote on a skin without fear of reprisal, ( XX vote's one of yy's skins a 6 because of some technical merit, so xx thought it deserved a 6,  unpon seeng XX's rating on their skin yy gets mad because they felt the skin deserved a 9, yy then goes over to xx's latest skin and votes out of anger, now the fight is on. Now XX fears voting his conscience and rating on its actual merits but instead votes high to keep from getting slammed in return or so his skins will get high ratings in return.) So why not just give everyone 10's and be done with it?

Any concerns about a skins recent rating's can be brought to the attention of the WC staff, it will be looked in to and if foul play is at hand it will dealt with accordingly..

If that's true (that you skin for yourself and the heck with every one else), then why upload?  What's the point?  You've skinned for yourself, you have the skin on your hard drive...why make it available for others?

And risk being accused of being a whiner, not being adult enough to handle the heat, or "just being paranoid"?  Those are all worse accusations than an unfairly rated skin in my opinion.  A poorly rated skin will go away...a reputation in the community (as I'm discovering) is pretty much for life, and it SURE won't help in getting promoted, now, will it?

I don't mean any of this to come off as being bitchy.  I'm being completely honest and intellectual when it comes to this issue, because as I've said, I had an "epiphany" this week...something that sort of shook me in the reasons for all this...stuff...this "being part of the community," and I'd like to put my skinning feet, philosophically speaking, back on solid ground.

... ok for the anonymity but what about to have the total count of how many persons voted and even better the specific number of who voted 5 stars \ 4 stars \ 3 stars etc.

it will be just few lines more respect the usual 1 line of the average count !

easy to say but I don't know if it's also easy to realize for a good site developer !

If XX votes a 6 on YY's skin because of technical merit, then XX shouldn't be afraid to tell YY about the technical merit -- YY is NEVER going to know what's wrong with the skin to deserve a 6, unless XX tells them.

Why would XX feel entitled to rate a skin a 6 without backing that up with a quantifiable cause?  And if XX feels inclined enough to vote in the first place, then taking the effort to explain WHY they voted in a certain way is the responsible thing to do.

There have been plenty of people that think they were being screwed over and asked a mod to look into it.  Most were right and got it corrected.  Those that were wrong didn't have to wear a sign saying there were a whiner.  Usually the only way the masses know of something is when the person tells them or backs a mod/admin into a corner with false accusations and they voice it.  Think about that.  (they post,  mod told me....... or post part of an email/pm and puts the mod/admin on the spot, so the truth is posted).  Its happened.  mods see tons of skins in all the different catagories.  All being equal, which stands out?  Which deserves a higher rating?  Does the mod open the skin up to see all the coding?  No.  They apply it, check it out, if it works it gets passed(approved) and the mod gives it a rating.  How many are perfect?  A 10 rating.  Damn few.
