Spy race possible?

I have done this in other 4x games.

I know that I can spy. What I wanted to do is do is support rebel movements, cause revolutions, undermine governments, commit acts of sabotage and frame other empires so that they go to war with each other.

Is stuff like this possible? How?

Here is why I ask. One of my most favorite games is when I played the Darlocks in MOO. I was in the corner of the galaxy. I then spied on everyone, and had framed all the computer AIs. It was so bad, that everyone went to war with everyone else. I supported rebel movements, assasinated key government officials. Basically, I set the galaxy ablaze while I sat in my corner quietly building up. When I finally attacked, the empires were so weak from war that it was a simple mop up routine.

Yes you can do just that.  You can send spies to sabotage entertainment/morale buildings, industries, research labs or whatever.  You can steal techs as well.  But what you cannot do is manipulate players into doing things directly as far as I know.

If you find a miserable planet and infiltrate their entertainment buildings, you can quite effectively cause revolutions.

Not that it would be as efficient as Darlocks were in MoO, but yes, you can do that. Drath Legion is the race for you.

You can brive some players into attacking orther players. Certain races are better at this than others. When you are the target of such, you are at least sometimes told that the attack was at the bequest of another power but not which one.

My last game I gave or sold ships and technology to the weaker side in several conflicts.

The closest that I can think of for assinating leaders would be to cause a nation so many problems that they dispose the curent leader. I have only seen this happen twice and only remember that the civiliztion was doing poorly and had some plannets that were unhappy. Maybe you can do something similar.

Can anyone tell me why my spies usually only last one day before they get eliminated by the enemy?  I have to keep trying planets until it finally sticks, so I can't really use them how I want.

Because the AI's seem to horde Spies alot. And if they don't use them to eradicate yours then sometimes they'll bombard you with them on occasion. The increased economy at higher difficulty levels makes that possible.
