Movies for gamers

Fire and Ice

Well been trollin and I saw ZehDon's post on Avatar movie and thought well, how about topic on fun movies for gamers to watch.  I will list 3 that are not new, they been around awhile..

Fire and Ice with Frank Frazetta art work(fun fantasy based movie)  I watched this on CD/DVD?

Lord of the Rings(not the fairly recent remakes by Peter Jackson, but the one done in cartoon by Ralph Bakshi?)  I saw this at a movie theatre in Westwood, CA.

Westworld- an old movie with great gaming idea(s).  The star of the movie is Yul Brynner.

Only one I haven't seen on your list is Westworld, although I should really watch Fire and Ice again.  I saw it once like half my life ago...

Here's a few ideas:

13th Floor (1999)

Dark City (1998)

eXistenZ (1999) The title of this one is actually the title of a game in the movie.

Strange Days (1995)

It really depends on the person. There aren't too many movies that will have universal appeal to gamers as the term 'gamer' covers so many different people. In terms of what the 'typical' gamer would enjoy, I have to throw my recommendations behind the following:
City of Lost Children.
12 Monkeys.
Hackers.
The Lawnmower Man.
Die Hard 4.0. (a.k.a. Live free or Die Hard).
Anti-Trust.
Shoot 'em up.

They all deal with questions/themes around technology or people in such ways that dedicated, mature gamers should be able to enjoy them. Except Shoot 'em up and Die Hard 4.0: they just kick serious ass and are worth the watch for good action.

I'll add a few comic book superhero movies into the mix.

Iron Man-with Robert Downey Jr., doesn't follow original comic but still fun to watch.  Could be considered an action movie.

The Hulk-with Edward Norton.  Didn't like the Hulk as comic or TV show, etc.,  but this movie was done well.  I give it praise because it made a fun, entertaining production out of a comic character I didn't really care about.  It also was a modern interpretation.

Superman-with Christopher Reeves.  The lead actor looks like a ringer.  He even comes across like an old comic hero from the early days.  The movie is also very entertaining with Margot Kidder and Marlon Brando.  This movie is fairly old now.  Kinda a mix with early storytelling like comic then diverges into full blown modern movie plot.

This topic needs more cheese and comedy.

To that end I nominate Demolition Man and Starship Troopers.  Both are guilty pleasure films.

The former is a vision of the future where surface society has become non-violent and conformist like a Mister Rogers Neighborhood set.  Those that aren't live underground.  Throw Stalone and Snipes into the mix as violent offenders released from cryo-prison and have them wreck the town.  The second has humanity fighting a bunch of CG bugs, huge swarms of them that rip humans to shreds.  Both are actually fully funded Hollywood films, just a bit... schlocky.  ;P

Starship Troopers

I watched that movie, and I liked it.  Then I read the book, and realized whoever was behind the movie Did Not Do The Research.

I can't believe that Tron has not yet been listed.

Its about two guys that get zapped into a computer and play the games. Losing a life means losing your life.

1. Donnie Darkko

2. A Clockwork Orange

3. Law Abiding Citizen (skip the morality bit and the tinkering mindfuckery is awesome)

4. The Inside man(again, great mind fuckery)

5. District 9 (I know a lot of people didn't like this, but it had great story telling skill)

6. Know1ng

7. The day the earth stood still

8. The Notebook(don't doubt me nigga)

9. Shaving Ryan's Privates (Saving Private Ryan, watch it...again...now)

10. I love you, man (HILARIOUS)

11. Ocean's Thirteen

12. Avatar

13. Anything Starwars

13. Anything Starwars

Except the prequels.  Original trilogy was way better, except for Return of the Jedi and those stupid Ewoks.  The original script had Wookies instead of Ewoks, but apparently Lucas decided Ewoks made for more marketable merchandise.

I personally find that the whole original trilogy rocked.

@Topic: I find too that a dev team should make a Stargate game. Until now, there were many announcements but they didn't seem to be ever released.

ZehDon's totally right about "gamer" being hardly more precise a category than "reader" or "grain-eater." For TBS lovers, this thread needs more 'epic' titles (and no, Star Wars doesn't count after the first two films; George Lucas let perhaps millions of us down with his descent into blockbusterdom).

A version of Starship Troopers done by someone who loves Heinlein as much as Peter Jackson loves Tolkien would be awesome. Even better would be to see someone give a good try at The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress or Time Enough for Love. Lazarus Long is definitely an epic character whose life often seemed like a horrible and/or wonderful game.

The two miniseries Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003) cover Frank Herbert's orignal Dune trilogy, and the first part is far superior to David Lynch's theatrical attempt from 1984 (and I say that as someone who really loves some of Lynch's other work). You can rent them, not sure if the DVDs are still available at retail.

Edit: SpardaSon, thanks very much for the tvtropes.org link. I'm a non-recovering postmodernist, so it's great fun to see people define and whine about something like 'popcultural osmosis.'

Dark Crystal-its slow but fun, just like a tbs.  Anyone remember the Gelfling's and Skeksis?  Was done by Jim Henson and Frank Oz.

My friends and I thoroughly loved Zombieland at the cinema.

Gamers <3 Zombies.

District 9 also went down great with my gamer mates.

And if I may?  The whole 4 Battlestar Galactica series.

I am relieved to see that nobody put Doom.

Well, yeah, I mean the only way that movie could have been worse was if Uwe Bol directed it.

What no Braveheart or Highlander?  Swords are getting no love in this thread it's all pew pew lazers and mind trips.

im a little lost on the point here...

are these movies that would make for interesting games?  half of the posts are movies are already made into games.  some, time and time again like tron and starwars.

if its movies that would make interesting games, how about Red Dawn (1984)?

Sandbox enviroment.  3rd person tactical shooter with RPG elements.  AI friendlies for squad combat or web play with others.  a town that can be accessed.  prison camp.  farms\ranches,  the mountains.  construction sites.  road blocks.  convey ambushes.  changing weather patterns and seasons.  wide range of weapons.

as a plus, i think i read somewhere that they are remaking it.  it would be pretty easy to release in conjuction before or with a new film (like they do so often these days).  it would be a success as long as the game play was solid and the environment lent itself to variety.

Kurosawa's Ran has early muskets in it, but blades rule the day and nearly every frame of the film is worth hanging on the wall as art.

Also for folks who don't mind subtitles, The Emperor and the Assassin is full of swordplay and massive battle scenes. (It's long and convoluted, though.)

  Heya DauntlessAnsible,

Just saying what movies I thought other gamers, like ZehDon who was excited to go see Avatar, might also like to watch.  I like your interpretation though, since I did say that one of the movies would be a good gaming idea(Westworld).  I guess it's a little bit of both.  I was really only making a comment with my movie selections because it sometimes nice to know something without giving away the story completelyX|

The repsonses from everyone, helps for greater selection/interpretation.  Red Dawn was fun to watch.  I think CnC(Command and Conquer; rts) used some of its ideas from the storyline.  Maybe just confusing things.  Also, I guess being on a heavy pc gaming website, many:')   are gonna post their mod/game movie tie-ins as well.  Copy/format/post:)
