You know what's really ridiculous, though? Black people do speak differently than whites,  and we're making an issue of how they don't; makiing a politician, like him or not, apologize for telling the truth. All because it's not PC. It's stupid.

Tell me you can't tell the difference--99 times out of 100--when you answer the phone, and hear the other person speak. You can usually tell black or white, just by the voice. I mean, even more, I don't know, "classy" blacks, like Maya Angelou, Bill Cosby, Thomas Sowell...you can tell.

The tonal quality, the cadence, certain vocal mannerisms....there is a difference. To deny it is wrong.

I agree with Nitro.  Blacks speak differently between each other just as whites do.  A good ole boy from texas does not sound like a Yonker, nor does a black from Wall Street sound like one from the ghetto.  It is a matter of laziness as Nitro says, as well as region.  Walter E. Williams sounds very much philadelphia, and none like ebonics.

It will be nice when they just assume your are a southerner, or American, and your color is irrelevant.

I am not African-American, I am American. I don't like racial terms. it is one thing I learned way back in the 60's if you make yourself different you see differences. Irish-Americans, German-Americans, Japanese-Americans unite! Become American!

I'm of Hispanic roots but I'm an American. I have always considered myself an American and the day I travel outside the US and would happen to break a law in some foregn country, they will address me as the American not the Puerto Rican.

My son likes using those dam ebonics words and sometimes it drives me nuts. I have no problem telling him and reminding him how silly he sounds. My wife use to talk that way to when I first met her but now she barely talks like that, except maybe with old friends. I do my best to make sure he does talk properly around family members.

I am in no way fully cognizant of all cultural idiocyncracies in all countries, but it seems to me that the North American hemisphere (specifically the French and English settled areas) are the only ones that practice hyphenation.  I guess we have it so easy, we have time to complain about stupid things like what 2 mongrels got together and bred us.
