What's better than Fences?

What's better than Fences?

Master Icons imho.

My idea long time ago similar to Fences.

Think of it as Fences 100% invincible but only made visible

when their related Master Icons are hovered over by mouse pointer.

For example looking at a Desktop you see only 3 (or more) Master Icons

"Games", "Internet", "Work".. nothing else.

Hover the mouse pointer over the Master Icon "Games"

and 20 shortcuts of games fade in.

Hover the mouse pointer over the Master Icon "Internet"

.. the 20 shortcuts of games fade out

and 20 Internet related shortcuts fade in.

click the shortcut Wincustomize

.. the 20 Internet related shortcuts fade out

and Wincustomize web site appears.

A crucial advantage is that your desktop can now have

far more shortcuts than normal!!

Each frame can hold an entire Desktop completely filled with shortcuts.

Also each frame can be on top of the other frames BUT ONLY ONE is activated

and made visible at any given time.

A frame is activated only when the mouse pointer hovers its related

Master Icon.

It's like having many Desktops that are activated when their

related Master Icon is hovered over by the mouse pointer.

Hopefully Stardock can implement Master Icons in Frames.

It will make life so much easier for many people that have so many shortcuts

on their Desktop and as more and more apps are made available and installed

by the user only Master Icons can help afaik.

You can have fences visible only when hovered over (which I like better than having to have a master icon in each region). But you can't have one fence on top of another one.

Actually, you can put them on top, but only one is on top, so when you hover over an icon on the visible layer beneath, the top layer takes over and you can't access the overlaid icons.

There's probably a way to select a fence without a master icon....

I really prefer my desktop completely free of icons most of the time.

This sounded interesting so I Googled it and couldn't find "Master Icons "  or anything like what you describe.

There is an Icon Masters but that's for creating icons.

Is the Master Icons you talk about available ? and if so do you have the link ?

Thanks.

DX can do that already. All you need is an object that opens a drag and drop menu for your shortcuts. The object can be whatever icon you want it to be,and you can have as many as your screen will hold. I'm not sure about the fade in/out function but that sounds possible also. PM a DX skinner and I'll bet they can whip you up a sample to try out.(if you have DesktopX installed, that is.)

Easy to do. Except the fade in/out part. I may be able to get help with that part. Getting a shortcut launcher to show on mouseover and hide on mouse away would be easy. Show/hide/show/hide. To FADE in and out would require script, which can be done too, but not by me.

I would need to know how many icons you intend to use per panel, your screen resolution, that kind of stuff. Most of my older DX themes can do this already with a minor adjustment.
