WinCustomize - September 2001

The number of unique visitors to the site increased again this month. Since April, traffic to the site has increased by around 10X to being around 600,000 unique people visiting the site.

The top 10 referring sites to WinCustomize that are within the community were:

#1 Stardock
#2 Deskmod.com
#3 DeviantArt
#4 Customize.org
#5 LS2K.org
#6 WinStep.net
#7 ShellCity.net
#8 LotsOfSkins.com
#9 Desktopian.org
#10 Shellfront.org

We thank these sites for their continued support.

The bandwidth scenario has continued to become problematic as we are way beyond the specs of this site.

Let me start by thanking those who have purchased shirts, CDs and hats. You guys help make this site possible. To those of you who have downloaded a lot of stuff but haven't purchased anything (or registered), the days of the free ride are ending soon.

We will be implementing a system in which those who have not contributed via the WC store or registered their SD software will be very limited in what they can download per month.

We just can't handle the amount of bandwidth we're getting. The problem isn't the # of users, it's the users largely with cable modems who are downloading 100+ megabytes of stuff per month who haven't registered their software or bought something from the store. We will be implementing a 5 megabyte per month limit on those who aren't in the database to help decrease bandwidth use.

We have some exciting things coming up for the site too in terms of new features. They probably won't show up this month but pretty soon. Stay tuned!

...or does he mean "those who have not contributed via the WC store or registered their SD software"?

The latter.

There will eventually be something like:

IF wcUser has downloaded > 5 megabytes this month
AND wcUser has not registered SD software
AND wcUser has not bought a CD or shirt or anything else THEN keep them from downloading more stuff until next month.

Otherwise, the site becomes excrutiatingly slow for everyone.

What about people who didn't buy anything but contribute in skins and community involvement? In other words what about the Apprentice guys and above?
Apprentices and above would be excluded from any limitations.

Another stat: Last month 33,729 new accounts were created.

Ahem... that's a hole right there. What stops a blocked user from creating a new account every time they it the wall?
