Enhancement - use tabs

Fences is a nice tool.  I would suggest one enhancement and that is to use tabs (rather than or in addition to the current set of regions).  Then the desktop items would take even less space but would still be quickly available.

Why not use Object Dock Plus then? That has tabs, and they hide off your screen when not in use. ;)

While using tabbed docks would do the job, ObjectDock (to me) doesn't hide as conveniently and is a little more clumsy... as in its takes time to go off screen when auto-hide is set, whereas Fences disappears/reappears instantly with a doudle click and has a smoother transition.

I have ObjectDock Plus, and while it has more feature/options, I've found myself using Fences more and more because it is so simple and convenient.... though the ability to add tabs would be a welcome feature, should it ever be added.

Sounds like what you really want is enhancements to ObjectDock. Problem is, all Fences does is shuffle icons around on your desktop, then render a shadow around each icon group. The icons are still on your desktop -- fences are not a content container; implementing tabs would require them to become so.
