help technical issue with my laptop

help technical issue with my laptop

Good day everybody.

I was hoping somebody could give me their opinion on a problem I am having with my laptop Studio 1735.

Two days ago I turned it off to go to bed like usual and yesterday morning when I tried to open it again it did not boot.

I removed the battery and all that in case it was just something simple like that but still it does not boot. The battery if fully charged, the power button turns on, nothing shows up on the screen, it stays blank, and the hard drive light stays on for only 3 or 4 seconds. Then the computer stays dead. Only the power button stays on

I have a feeling that it might be the power supply but I am no expert.

Any input would be appreciated.

Like what would you do to have it fixed  and if younthink you know the solution how much do you think it would cost and where would you go. My Dell warraty is over since September.

Thanks all.

I have two sticks of ram and both wont boot.

Now the laptop won't even turn on anymore meaning that the power button does not even turn on. The bat is good I tried it on another laptop.

If everything else tests ok, I'm thinking here that your RAM seems the likely culprit... cos when I built a PC from spare parts a while ago, it would not power up/post/boot because both sticks of RAM were dead.

I knew that it was going to be a trial and error thing because I was told 3 of the 8 sticks I was given for the job were faulty/dead (they just weren't marked that way), but once I'd inserted 2 healthy sticks the PC powered up, posted and aubsequently booted without issue.

However, before purchasing new RAM, see if you can swap in a stick of (old, unimportant but working) compatible RAM to see if the laptop powers up/posts, etc. The reason I suggest this is because I had an Asus motherboard with one faulty DIMM slot, and although the PC would power up, it would not boot even if a healthy stick was inserted in that slot.

If you have a similar situation (and it seems possible... faulty slots can burn out your RAM) installing new RAM will not resolve your problem... a new mobo is then in order.

PS I went to futureshop to have the laptop evaluated and they refused to test it saying that it's a dell and they won't touch it unless I bought it there. That's a lot of help to fix a laptop thanks a lot futureshop!

A real helpful bunch! *insert sarcasm here*

I don't know what it's like where you are, but I find the smaller, non-syndicated PC stores to be more helpful, and certainly better on price for parts and labour.  The larger/syndicated stores (well around here, anyway) have set prices (like $90 an hour), and that's what you get charged, even if it only takes 15 minutes.... whereas my local PC store usually charges me $20 - $30 for most simple jobs, and a maximum of $80 for more extensive work.

It's almost as if the larger, syndicated stores don't want your business... it's their way or not at all... and if you don't like that it's: "Well bugger off, then, there's plenty of fools coming in who are easily parted from their money."

If I were you, I'd be giving Futurestore the flick and finding somebody else... small family businesses, I find, are the better ones because they value your custom more.  Anyway, it's worth a thought. :)

For all of you who helped me I sent the pc to Microbytes a computer store I trust here in Montreal Canada.

It will take about three weeks to get an evaluation back. So I am without a laptop I am so depressed :)

Never mind!  To help make up for it, I'll spend twice as much time on mine (PC) :-"

Seriously, I hope you get it back sooner than that... and for not too big a repair bill. :)

I can always hope it was nothing serious.

I just hope it's not my main board.

The cost of the evaluation was 60$ but if I get it repaired there they will credit me that amount on the repair bill.

I am crossing my fingers.

So here is what I found out...

My board seems to have given up it's life 14 months after being purchased I might add.

My pc cost me 1400 canadian and to replace the board dell tells me I have to give them 985$...

This is way beyong ludicrous. I can barely believe it. At that price I can probably get a better laptop than my own now...

I bought a laptop for absolutly nothing. I am not a happy camper...

Anybody have any ideas as to what I can do now?

That is totally ridiculous... criminal, even.  There's no way I'd pay $985 just to replace a mobo.  If there's nowhere else you can go to get a better value/cheaper board than that, I'm sorry to say, you'd be better off investing in a new machine.  Heck, you could probably pick up a pre-loved laptop in good condition for a lot less than that.... or build a reasonable desktop rig for less.

I can't blame you there, but sadly I have no other thoughts that may be of help to you right now, other than, perhaps, question the warranty period... how your laptop broke down just two months beyond the warranty period.  My wife has a $900 AUD Compaq laptop which has a 3 year warranty on parts and labour, so it just seems to me that a $1400 laptop should have better than a 12 month warranty, which it seems is all you were given.
