The Eastern Orthodox Church, refers to itself as Orthodox, not Catholic. Thats the difference between the Church of Rome, and and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

To be more specific, in Greece our Church is called "Greek Orthodox", being slightly different than other Christian Orthodox religions (the differences are more typical, than something solid).

In Europe, over the course of history, ever since the Christianity was split into 2 big "parts", the Catholic Church, and the Orthodox Church, there has been quite a bit of "rivalry", so to speak, between these 2 Churches/religions.

Lastly, the word "orthodox", comes from the Greek words "orthos" which means = "correct",   and the word "doxa" which means = "belief", in ancient greek. Orthodox = Correctly Believing, which means that the Orthodox Church believe that they are the only ones who are correct, and all other religions as false.

I would give you karma, but I am well aware of the schism between Rome and the Eastern Orthodox Church...I would point out that the Eastern Orthodox Church is also called the Holy Orthodox Catholic Church...

Catholic has nothing to do with Rome...to be catholic is to be of the original church of the apostles (obviously, a matter of perspective and opinion)...all Christians believe themselves to be catholic, which is why Roman Catholic is an important distinction...

This is why I mentioned that the Easter Orthodox Church is usually just called "Orthodox", and the Roman Catholic Church is usually just called "Catholic". By definition, Catholic = Orthodox, so to speak, because they both believe they are correct, and everyone else is wrong. Even though I would say that my religion is even more fanatic on this part, believing that they are absolutely correct, and that there should be NO doubt at all in its believers/followers' minds.

As for Greece, we dont call ourselves Catholic at all, like I said, "Greek Orthodox", or "Greek Christian Orthodox".

To answer directly, the Easter Orthodox Church, considers themselves Catholic, because they believe they are correct, but by name, are not called Catholic, to distinguish themselves from the Roman Catholic Church.
