PM2004 - Canadian challenge/candidates

I was thinking it would be interesting to do an all-Canadian challenge in The Political Machine (perhaps this weekend). Here are the Canadian candidates that I created, but you’ll probably have to google them for the pictures. Most of them are Dems, though, because most Canadians would be Dems. I tried to make them from states that are either close to where they are from, or where they would easily fit in politically.

Brian Mulroney (R): Progressive Conservative Prime Minister 1984-1993, NAFTA, now remembered as one of the most unpopular Prime Ministers in history
Ed Broadbent (D): Leader of the NDP 1975-1989, recently made a return to politics, winning a seat in Ottawa in a landslide, known for being the most popular NDP leader since Tommy Douglas
Jack Layton (D): Current leader of the NDP, won 19 seats in 2004 election (best since Ed ’88), former Toronto city councillor
Jean Chretien (D): Liberal Prime Minister 1993-2003, known for saying no to Iraq war and facial deformities
Joe Clark (R): Prime Minister 1979-1980, could teach a class on what not to do in a minority government situation, led Progressive Conservative Party in 1990s until it was taken over by Stephen Harper’s Alliance Party
John A. Macdonald (R): Canada’s first Prime Minister 1867-1873, 1878-1892. Can take pretty much all the credit for creating Canada, made CPR (trans-continental railroad) alcoholic, died in office.
John Diefenbaker (R): Prime Minister 1957-1963. Narrowly defeated Louis St. Laurent in election, used television to his advantage, his style got real old, real fast though.
Kim Campbell (R): Prime Minister for 132 days in 1993, lost 1993 election winning a record low of 2 seats.
Lester B. Pearson (D): World renowned diplomat, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Prime Minister 1963-1968
Louis Riel (D): Metis leader who led 2 unsuccessful revolutions in 1870 and 1885. Hanged for treason in 1885, but still popular in Manitoba and Quebec.
Louis St. Laurent (D): Intelligent, gentlemanly, known affectionately as Uncle Louis. Made governing Canada look easy from 1948 until his narrow defeat in 1957.
Paul Martin (D): Current Prime Minister, nearly lost 2004 election due to corruption and scandal.
Pierre Elliot Trudeau (D): Prime Minister 1968-1979, 1980-1984, most charismatic figure in Canadian political history, so popular that he created “Trudeaumania.”
Stephen Harper (R): Current Conservative Party leader, seen as too far right to lead, man with no personality and a crappy haircut.

Yeah, but I don't have enough Republicans. Even the Republicans I do have now would be McCain. I was thinking of getting the 4 stooges of 1890s politics (the 4 people who tried to replace John A after he died). One didn't even want the job, one died of a heart attack, one was incompetent, and one lost an election 10 weeks after he was sworn in. And maybe Borden, Bennett, and Meighen. And Turner and Laurier for the Dems. If I knew how to post pictures, I would give you my pics. Or I could e-mail them to you.

And I really REALLY don't like Harper, mostly due to the fact that I'm a NDPer and he's pretty far-right for Canada (we've been moving to the left ever since the late 60s).

Got Trudeau, Mackenzie King, and MacDonald on my computer. I downloaded some stats because I found that none of them had served in the military and thus should not get above a 5 on military experience. I also lowered some other stats for MacDonald as well per he is built on too many points. I also changed their states to ME because its the closest to Canada in geography and ideology.

Historical Perspective:
Charles Tupper (R): Shortest serving Prime Minister (1896). Took over after the incompetent Mackenzie Bowell resigned, but lost the 1896 election 10 weeks later
John J. C. Abbott (R): Prime Minister 1891-1892. Took over after John A. Macdonald died. Didn't want the job, but the only other obvious candidate was John S. Thompson, who couldn't be Prime Minister right away because of religious bigotry.
John S. Thompson (R): Prime Minister 1892-1894. Was born a Protestant, but converted to Catholicism upon marriage, which made him unpopular among the Protestant population, and unable to take office for a while after John A. Macdonald died. Died of a heart attack in England.
John Turner (D): Prime Minister in 1984. Took office when Pierre Trudeau retired. Known for calling an election, and getting his ass kicked in the debate in a sound bite still shown today before every debate as “what not to do” (Turner: “…I had no option.” Mulroney: “You had an option. You could have done the right thing…”).
Mackenzie Bowell (R): The most incompetent Prime Minister in history, the only Prime Minister ever to be removed from power by a revolt within his cabinet.
R. B. Bennett (R): Prime Minister 1930-1935, served during the depression, legend has it that Mackenzie King deliberately lost to him in order to avoid serving during the depression and getting blamed for the hard times.
Wilfrid Laurier (D): Prime Minister 1896-1911, was a compromiser (especially between British and French-Canadian issues), but that eventually made him unpopular in both French and English Canada. Oversaw Canada’s participation in the Boer War.

Robert Borden was our Prime Minister 1911-1920, during WW1, and he got creamed in Quebec on the issue of conscription (the Quebecers saw it as fighting the British's war for them) in 1917, but still won the "most bitter election in Canadian history" with a strong majority, despite losing all but 3 seats in Quebec, due to his coalition with most Liberals outside Quebec, and 2 new laws that skewed the voting towards his government.

Robert Stanfield was a Progressive Conservative leader who lost to Trudeau 3 times, in 1968, 1972 and 1974. in 1972, he came very close to beating the extremely charismatic Trudeau, losing by only 2 seats. In the 1974 election, he was caught on camera fumbling a football during a photo op, and that has became his legacy ever since. That and being "The Greatest Prime Minister Canada never had"
