Suggestion: "Mature" Language Setting

Hey everyone,

This is an idea I had based on my experiences with online multiplayer games.  I have found that some online MPers use a significant amount of profanity when chatting in a multiplayer game.  I was thinking it would be cool if RTP could have a profile option where you can specify your level of tolerance for "adult" language, so that you wouldn't get paired with players that habitually use profanity.  I've found that use of profanity isn't specific to any one kind of player mentality; some people just curse a lot regardless of their disposition.  It also isn't age-specific, so none of the current preferences in RTP really cover this issue directly.

Since RTP covers non-Stardock games as well, this would be especially helpful for games that have a wide age range.  Maybe have three tolerance options:  "No profanity," "mild profanity," and "strong profanity."  This way people of any persuasion can find the perfect gaming partners.  I personally find it annoying when I buy a T-rated game, only to find that the multiplayer community is completely overrun with players using "M-rated" language.  On the other hand, I know that some people don't mind this at all, so I think having a profile preference for this would be highly beneficial.

Anyway, it's just an idea, but since RTP is geared towards helping people find truly like-minded gamers, I think it's definitely worth consideration.

I can agree with that.  I do curse occasionally, though not continuously or insulting people all the time.  Those who do that really irritate me.

I think that profanity is an "immature" language and should be banned altogether. If you feel the need to use it keep it to yourself.

I personally would take this approach, too, but I have read opinion pieces by many people who are frustrated by games and communities that filter foul language.  I agree with you: despite all cultural indications to the contrary, excessive profanity is extremely immature; it shows that the person using it doesn't have the wisdom and/or desire to deal with their situation in an adult, responsible way.

However, since many people oppose foul language filters, I still think that the best option is to have RTP offer a profile preference for it.  Judging from what I've read, this wouldn't be hard to implement, as it's just a setting that the program compares to another player's setting.

Considering how many M rated games use it, that would make "Ready to Play" into "Ready to be Endlessly Mocked"

I don't think that's quite what they're going for.

We have a motion to add "No Profanity" to the likeness questionaire.  Anyone else?  Thoughts?

Sounds good.  I'd like a Mild option as well, though...as I mentioned heavy cursers bug me.

That was part of my original idea.  Three levels: one for people who don't care about language, one for people who only tolerate mild language, and one for people who won't tolerate any profanity at all.
