Tough love for Object Desktop

Tough love for Object Desktop

For many years, Object Desktop was synonymous with the phrase “What the next version of Windows might have in it.”

The first Windows version, released way back in 1999, introduced GUI skinning, ZIP files being treated as folders, the Control Center.

In fact, here’s a screenshot of Object Desktop from 1999.

Object Desktop in 1999

Those features we take for granted now in Windows.  GUI skinning? Windows XP provided that.  ZIP files as folders, old hat now.  A “Sidebar”? Windows Vista users know something about that.  Features like gadgets and widgets and icon changing and other such things were also part of what made Object Desktop so forward thinking.

Object Desktop in 2009

Object Desktop became extremely popular and its users and Stardock became invested in the feature set that made it so popular.  The problem is that Windows itself has moved on and Object Desktop has to move on too.  That means it’s time for some tough love.

On October 5, 2009, after a nearly 3 year absence, I have returned to being in charge of Object Desktop again.  Being away from the desktop enhancements area has allowed me to take a fresh look at the state of the art in Windows tech, the “Skinning community”, and so forth.  And I must say, there’s a lot of work needed here.

Decisions

After looking at things, I’ve come to the conclusion that we need to make some pretty big changes.

#1 Our focus will be power users. NOT casual users.  For the past 3 years, things like MyColors have focused on casual users. The idea is very sound and I was an early supporter of the concept of MyColors – grow beyond power users into the much larger base of casual users.

The problem is that casual users barely do more than change their wallpaper and they’re not likely to pay $50 (let alone $70 for “ultimate”) to spice up their desktop.

#2 Make Windows better. Object Desktop was never supposed to become a cosmetic product. The idea was that Object Desktop fixes the things in Windows. Windows was not competitive compared to say the Mac or even Linux visually and Object Desktop helped solve that.  But Windows Vista and Windows 7 look pretty good. Our objective should be to focus on making Windows better overall and there’s plenty of work there.

#3 Eliminate “Ultimate”.  Breaking Object Desktop into Standard and Ultimate editions was a mistake. It should be Object Desktop. Period. So people who have Object Desktop Ultimate will get their access to it extended and we will return to a single version with the launch of Object Desktop 2010.

#4 Content is NOT king. A lot of time, energy, and money was spend making suites and themes these past 3 years.  While many users like the themes, many of them don’t like it coming via MyColors.  MyColors is going to be moved to our enterprise group for license and distribution through our OEM partners.  Mixing and matching the two is not a good idea in my view.  Instead, content will be provided as .suite files that users can then manipulate however they want in Theme Manager.

#5 Sunset programs. There are many programs that we’re going to have to sunset.  What I mean is that new users of Object Desktop won’t get them. People who have Object Desktop already will continue to be able to download them but they won’t be getting updates.  RightClick, Virtual Desktops and ObjectBar will make their way into the sunset.  Others will start to follow soon.

Basically, if a program doesn’t work on Windows 7, 64-bit within the next month, it’ll be sunsetted.  That doesn’t mean that that type of program will go away.  We’ve already started putting together a design document for a replacement for RightClick that we think is a lot better.  We have new ideas for virtual desktops that can make use of WPF and other newer techs.

Now, I know many people reading this will be horrified at some of this.  The focus going forward is going to be Windows 7.  That doesn’t mean users of Windows XP are going to be dropped. They’re not.  But we are going to need to start concentrating our resources on a single platform and that platform is going to be Windows 7.

As a reminder of what kinds of cool stuff we were able to do when we could focus on a single OS:

My objective for the next 6 months is to make sure Object Desktop becomes synonymous with cutting edge technology again.  And do that, we will need to make some tough choices and focus our efforts onto doing cool stuff that hasn’t been done before that make using Windows better.

I realize that Brad isn't worried about me, but I am not gonna be a happy camper if DX is sunsetted!!!

I wouldn't expect it to go anywhere since we use it for our game UIs and such too, not just widgets.

Well that's good to hear. :)   It's been pretty mum for while now.

This is pretty exciting. Looking forward to things FINALLY getting done, and focusing on the future (Win 7, etc.)!

I don't suspect that happycamper88 will be returning here to discuss the finer points on thier opinions as posted in reply # 26.

Oh well, never mind then. :S

I see there are suites and yes, the new "mycolors" music is a suite. Good choice, that. And I like it too! Thanks.

My favorite themes are always the holiday themes, such as - My Halloween by Xav73 and his other works. This is as complete a theme as I could wish for with XP. In Win7 you need to do more things like this complete with sounds. Also, I think you should fully integrate DesktopX into the process to completely change the user interface. I imagine a script that either checks what's installed on your computer or asks users what they have installed and/or want to link to with objects. I think these two together are the only real way forward to completely alter people's ideas of what a computer interface should look like and can do. That promise has been there for a long time but never been fully utilized nor completed IMO. I think OD subscribers are the way you can fund this and test out your progress in making any Win7 programs as complete as they can be.

And no, I'm not interested in having games and other things I must purchase continually pushed at me. You should have one area where other items not included in OD can be purchased, where games can be purchased but it should be in an entirely separate section from OD and made clear. As it is now, I click some item only to find out that this is not included in OD and I must purchase it separately if I want it. We all have to make money but that's a little dishonest IMO.

I hope the new team focuses on taking OD in the right direction with lots of neat things for us to utilize and download and changes the way people see computer interfaces. You've got a lot of work to do and some rep to rebuild.

Another question I have is : What happens to ThinkDesk ? Will it be enhanced or remain with Multiplicity and KeepSafe ? There where some great ideas in there... And Multiplicity alone is a killer-app.

Yeah! We gotta keep multiplicity!!!   5*

AWESOME!  I don't have Object Desktop for all of the reasons you named.  I don't care for My Colors and pre-set themes.  I love Window Blinds and Skin Studio and would love to see those both as part of Object Desktop.  Can't wait to see the changes you are proposing!  I love the original concept of improving Windows.  I think the themes, My Colors, etc. have a place for those who enjoy using them but I uninstalled My Colors because I prefer to things my way.  Make the changes and I will buy Object Desktop for sure!!  What great news!

Yeah! We gotta keep multiplicity!!!

Not really part of Object Desktop, but of course we will.

Since I have DX running on Server 2008 R2 [x64 only], DX looks to be just fine for the future.

So, you finally woke up and realized one of the basic tenets of business: retaining an ugly customer is far more profitable than chasing the skirts of the pretty and flighty customers who want Pretty Things. About f*&@in' time! I was ready to drive up to your offices just to slap some sense into you. But, I guess you can see the results of failed business decisons outside your front door....can't you.

Yes, focus on the smart, tough customer who pays for his product, gives you attitude for making bad decisions, but stays with your product for years.  [the screenshot from 1999 really made me feel nostalgic]

I do have one question though ......

I was just in Impulse and realizing my Object Desktop Ultimate subscription expires on Nov. 24th and was thinking about renewing it now (since there is that survey discount available ;) ) , but I was thinking about just getting Object Desktop not Ultimate since it seems the majority of the apps I mainly use are available without the Ultimate version and the couple that I do use from the Ultimate aren't going to be developed further. But now I'm wondering if I should just wait altogether for the release of Object Desktop 2010.

Anyways does your above statement mean that subscription dates are going to be extended or that if you resubscribe and already have Ultimate you only need to pay for the regular Object Desktop subscription price but will still get updates to the programs in Ultimate if there are any?

Opening Impulse just a few minutes ago and getting a prompt asking me if I want to update my subscription now because it is running out soon reminded me that I never got an answer to this question.

i think if you have an ultimate subscription it will count as 1.5 years, as you are paying for 1.5 normal OD subscriptions, though frogboy will be the best perso to confirm this

No Doubt !!!Onward and Upward!!

But my labour is ahead also... I hve XP.....

We're going to give people who have Ultimate a full extra year actually.

Wow. That is great to hear. Thanks for the response Frogboy.

On December 2, 2009, Object Desktop and Object Desktop Ultimate will be merged into Object Desktop. Users with Object Desktop Ultimate will get a full year added to their account (so now is the ideal time to pick up Object Desktop Ultimate).

Oh. Glad I read that other thread. My current subscription runs out the week before that. Guess I'll have to remember to resubscribe before it does and take advantage of that.

A full extra year is good compensation for those who have subscriptions running less than a year. Nothing for any additional years of subscription purchased? Can I have a certificate with a gold star atleast? ;)

I think Object Desktop 2010 was released.

I know. An we got the longer subscription, which I am thankful for. But what I wanted to achieve is any news about further or updates of apps. ;) Maybe it was a little short asked.

Which apps specifically were you looking at?  The obvious chnages are DeskScapes 3, WindowBlinds 7 and Tweak7, as well as the addition of Fences Pro.

Well DesktopX comes to mind......:-"

There should be a new DesktopX 4 update this week.

Let's review where we're since October:

  1. Fences released (and Fences Pro for ODNT users). This is a pretty revolutionary new program. There's nothing on Windows quite like it and it has become the most popular downloaded desktop enhancement on CNET since release.
  2. WindowBlinds 7 released. Probably the biggest new version of WindowBlinds since its original release. Lots of video demos out there.
  3. SkinStudio 7 Pro released. Major new version adds a lot of new features including support for the new UIS0 skin format.
  4. DeskScapes 3 added. Adds hybrid dream support, support for on-the-fly enhancement of existing wallpapers (the only program on the net that can do this as far as I'm aware).
  5. IconPackager 5.0 released. Supports Windows 7 icons, addresses numerous requests users have made during the past year.
  6. DesktopX 4 has gone into beta.
  7. Tweak 7 / TweakVista 2.0 were released. Major changes to both UI and functionality.
Not too shabby 2 months. :)
