Galactic Civilizations 3

Hi all!

Recently I've been reading dozens of posts for Galactic Civilizations 3. These post/threads have asked many questions: lists of new ideas, engine improvements, release dates. But I have Never  read aout this one simple question, Will it ever come out?

Everyone here would love a GC3, including me. But I want a (mostly) definitive answer, preferably from a dev, Will Galactic Civilizations 3 ever be made?

Thanks for taking your time reading this

When they where anoncing Elemental Frogboy (Itink announced that there woldnt be GalCiv3 inthis DECADE (2010). Then who knows.

i'm pretty positive. i've read a few posts where brad has spoken wistfully on the subject. he's implied for example that any gc3 would use the elemental engine. i just don't think they're in a hurry. mostly because - whatever you'd like done with gc - the game as is basically works. i think the tipping point will come when people looking for a new space 4x start looking at gc2's clunky, blocky graphics and gems-floating-in-space and say "ugh." though personally i do that already.

i think for gal civ 3 they need to institute a cargo frieghter that has to go between your planets and transport your monetary resources to your homeworld before you can utilize it. That way wars can affect commerce really bad. that would be cool. not just trade embargo's

Er, pretty sure they would just send the money by subspace transfer instead of carting about currency like cavemen in starships.

GC2 is definitely a bit more challenging on the largest map size introduced in TA.  It gives the AI a lot more time and room to spread to colonies.  So, together with a tech tree mod, that's enough to make for an interesting game.

I guess that 3 years after the original question we can safely say it will never come out. A pity :(

I think it will be made. They are are focusing on Elemental for now, maybe for more experience for more designers and to fine tune the game engine. Then they will use it to make Galactic Civilizations 3. . Many game designers have made a new style of game and game engine in between releases of their star game. (This forum is not placing my paragraph/sentence spacers when I use the quick reply box.)

Well hey it makes more sense than trying to keep chugging away on the old platform.  Don't get me wrong, I love GC2 but I want to see it progress as a product and as a game.  So yeah, a sequel that makes the best use of the hardware that is commonly available now, that's the logical progression.

Here's the ugly truth: GC2 is dying and though it was one of the best games of its time that time is rapidly coming to a close :(. I pick up GC2, I play it, and realize just how awsome the ideas are. Design your own ships, build your empire, watch the battles. Everything's great except for the last part. The battles are so bad I can't enjoy the good parts any more. A beam will go straight through an enemy's hull and then make a small explosion a few seconds later. A missile will hit, cause damage, wait a bit, and then explode. Armour looks like a red energy shield. A beam will fly out of the back of a forward facing cannon and in general the graphics just aren't good enough.

I'm not suggesting you use an incredibly expensive engine to make visually amazing battles. But look at Gratiduous Space Battles. It is a 2D game! The graphics aren't incredible, but they're good enough and the mechanics of the battles are polished. Turrets rotate to shoot in different directions and when they do hit the explosions happen on time. Armour and point defences aren't just retextured shields.

So, while I think GC2 was awsome in its day a lot of people can't get past those graphics anymore and I speculate that in a year or two people will just stop; that is if they're anything like me. I don't think the whole game needs to be replaced or even changed in the slightest but battles HAVE to be revamped, big time, again to the sort of level of GSB at least.

To make a third game a success though I think a few more revamps would be needed. Things like proper land battles that look just as good as the space ones. And for both space and land battles I think it would be nice to be in command, again like GSB. You don't need to be telling your crew what systems to repair and when to allocate emergency power to the shields, just click on where you want to move and who you want to attack.

To elaborate on the land battle topic, how about research for land? The ability to get the tech and then design vehicles and troops (by that I mean either the equipment of ground forces or designing a battle droid with a phaser cannon for a hand.) And while we're on the subject of designing, I think a more complex editor would be great. For example, I want to be able to choose what type of power core I'm using. FTL and STL engines, so I have both speed on the map and maneuverability in battle. Shall I put a backup generator in my life support system so I can make sure they keep running? Shall I give the ship escape pods? Science labs for exploration and research? Bulkheads so I can survive a hull breach? Cargo bays if I'm a freighter? Docking ports if I'm a starbase?

I know all that really would be a lot to ask since the game is good already, but I think it would take the kind of features I've just described to make a really good game for the 2010s. This is a bit of a plea: Galactic Civ is sooo awsome, and I want it to be the best again! This is one of my favourite games of all time and I'd pay a lot of money to have the kind of fun I did with GS2 again. So please, don't give up on this title! Make GS3 before it's too late!!!

Okay, that about raps up the rant for today :) For now I'm off to find another thread where I can plead for GS3.

Game development takes time, and you're not going to get anywhere near a good enough game by ranting about it not being here yet.  Of course it's not here yet, Fallen Enchantress has just been released, and Stardock isn't some gigantic game factory cranking out bland sports franchise game after bland sports franchise game.

Saying that GC2 is dying is nonsensical.  People log in and post on these forums near enough every day.  The patient ones, anyway.  The impatient ones make some post bemoaning the game being dead every few months and then whiz off to play some other game.

The combat viewer is not the heart of the game.  Sure, it could use a lot of polishing, but in no way does it make the game unplayable.  You go looking for visual inconsistency in any game, you're sure going to find some.

Besides, visuals are just one crucial element.  You completely glossed over the need for an epic space battle track.  FE has a kick-ass set of battle tracks, some of them composed by Geoff Knorr, whom you might know from his work on Civ 5.

I agree with that as I continue to play it, although...

I do tend to bounce between games, but always come back to play GC2 :)

I like the game so much, that I do impatiently whine about no new information about a possible GC3, however, I wouldn't call it ranting...

With all that being said WTG Stardock live long and prosper

Maybe someone would consider Kickstart for GC3? I'd give a hefty sum if there were no online activations or online service requirements.

You can't Kickstart something that is someone else's intellectual property.

And Stardock's going to release it when it's ready.

All I want for Christmas is an announcement that GC3 will be released December 24, 2013.  Could it be totally out of the question?? A Tuesday 13 months away???  Only Stardock can say B)

Hello.

I am one from anonymous developer.

Before our company will decide to give the official statment, i want people to know the truth!

There will be Galactic Civilization 3, but probably it won't be early then 2020 and the reasons for this are:

1) We could add a couple dozen new features and improve graphic and could easily name it Galactic Civilization 3, but that is not they way we want. We have a very very high standards and expectations for our games , so our games must not just look pretty but have a very big complexity, alot of features, be intelligent and very high quality. So to do all that requires a lot of hard work and of cause time.(unlike 99% of computer games companies who just care about making alot of money, but not great games).

2) We are working right now on fantasy game in tradition of Heroes of Might and Magic , but it will be a lot much more supperior then the resent Heroes of Might and Magic 6, ( and by saying "a lot" i mean a lot!!!) and on it's engine will be based Galactic Civilization 3, because we were really pissed off by the fact that after Heroes of Might and Magic 4 , the game fell in to the hands of untalented and average intelligent people at the best, which care about making big money but not truly very good games and Heroes of Might and Magic 5 and 6 are total crupp, with ok graphic and with almost zero complexity and intelligence. These games can play even people with monkey's intelligence and probably even monkeys itself...

3) The new engine needs powerful CPU with at list 4 cores and for a full performance u might need even server grade CPUs as Intel Xeon, but we will try to optimize the code as best as possible but with no compromise to the game and features.  But at current development stage we do not now what minimum specs will be.....

4) The graphical part of the game will be very advanced too and probably will require high end graphic card too, but people with lower specs computers might be able to play it a minimal graphical settings.

I just want to say that i am not going to respond to this post or any PMs because as i seid i am anonymous developer but i wanted people to know the truth.

Have a nice day people!

Well, I'm sure happy to see that information :) A little bummed but it's understandable.

Being that

I doubt if anyone would reply to this, but being that there will a while to say the least it would be nice if possible for an update fixing some of the suggestions in other posts :(

well worth a try  even though most likely not feasible :P

Without knowing the source, it's kinda difficult to say whether this information is accurate.  Anyone can dig up their old user account and write stuff.

very true, why did you do that MarvinKosh lol :P

I don't know.  I have no idea why I would post some random rumours about a sequel and then deny it.  It will forever remain a mystery. :P

1st- Chilly72 is obviously full of shit.

2nd-I personally believe that GC3 is the project that Jon Shafer is working on.

Hey guys, I'm "Fallen Devi" on a new account, long shot I know!

So I come back to this website just on the off-chance something about GC3 was announced. Looking at the "Recent posts"  section I saw "GC3".

Cool!

Upon seeing my old username I was just floored, I honestly laughed for a good five minutes on seeing this. Glad my post, which i made over three years ago, is still generating discussion... for some reason...

Made my day, thank you so much XD

I'm really hoping that when they launch GC3, if they ever will, it will have a 3D star map, you know something that resembles a real galaxy

There are really only 3 things I want changed in GC3: A better/more balanced combat system, A more convenient way to control the massive number of ships you end up with late in the game, and a better custom race designer.

Anything else is optional as far as I'm concerned (honestly, that last one is too).

Personally I would love for the custom race designer, game editors(tech tree editor, etc...) and diplomacy to get huge improvements. I like the United Planets as well, and would love for that to have more options, like being able to commission meetings, votes for ceasefires, etc...
