[SUGGESTION] Athos as a faction name may be offensive

Athos as a faction name (And an "evil" one as such) may be offensive to some. Specifically there is a place in Greece called mount Athos which is home to the eastern orthodox relegion's most revered monasteries and monks. I think that some would find such connotations offensive.

I always thought people taking offense at the idea of evil being represented symbolicly with black as silly, the root of this is obvious and has nothing to do with race.

Human fear of the dark, because we have such a well developed sense of vision being robbed of it at night is frightening particularly to our ancestors who would have had nocturnal predators to fear, hence night and black (the abscence of light) become symbols of evil in many human cultures.

Sorry just an aside, I agree if they choose to change this or not won't make any difference to the game.

Let it stay and let them make a Tolerance check. People should learn to improve their Tolerance Skill instead of forcing everyody else to improve their Preventive Guilt one. At least for simple and innocent things like this.

You know, I never even heard of that, and I do consider myself to be relatively well read. I don't think the vast majority of people will even know about Mount Athos, much less be offended by Stardock using the name for a Fallen faction.

There are other references to Athos, some of them predating the monastic order, and even "evil" references to Athos.

  • In Ancient Greek mythology the Giantess, whom the Holy mountain Athos is named after, threw said mountain at Zeus. He knocked it to the ground where it is today.
  • Athos 1 was a tanker which spilled 265,000 galleons of crude oil into the Delaware river in 2004. Qualifies as evil for me :)

For a more complete list you can look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athos

But I don't think anyone will be insulted from having an evil faction named after a holy mountain, if anything it might make people take note of the mountain and maybe even visit or join the order :)

This may be a little off topic but a few years ago I saw this documentary on a bunch of Monks who lived in a Monastery in Italy. They made wine and most of them had taken a vow of silence. The thing I liked most about it was that even though they couldn't talk out loud they did have a means of communication. They had been given a bunch of computers as donations and one of the things they had was on-line service. All the monks who couldn't talk out loud used Instant Messaging services to talk to each other and sent each other emails all day so they could talk about their faith and making wine. It was a really good documentary, I wish now I could remember what it was called so I could point it out to everyone. It didn't mention whether or not they played video games and most of them were rather elderly so I somehow doubt they spent a lot of time (if any) playing games. I was still rather shocked they even communicated on-line. When I think of "Monks" I think of those who have given up all worldly possessions. I guess as long as the PC's are donated to them it's all good though.
