What were you thankful for?

... for this Thanksgiving just past

The holiday is now dead and gone, but it's not too late to take a few seconds and remind ourselves what we had to be thankful during the holiday just past.

On a personal note, I'm glad for whomever wrote the magazine articles that my wife and daughter were reading with sample pictures of skin cancers and such. Thanks to prodding from them, and my own feeling that something wasn't right the dime-sized dry/scaley spot on my arm that wouldn't go away, I went and had the spot biopsied and eventually removed after it was found to be cancerous/pre-cancerous. Basal cell skin cancer may be farely common, but anytime I read / hear about cancer, I sort of cringe and hope for the best for whomever involved. In my case, it was not that bad, though my upper arm (just under the short sleeves) looks a bit like Dr. Frankenstein sewed me up (stiches come out in a few more days, am really looking forward to that, so I can hopefully stop itching in that area soon).

Further up the importance scale, I'm thankful for (maybe dropping back down the scale a bit too :p ) friends and family. My family always sits at the top, but friends are pretty high on the scale too. It's nice to have people to talk with, joke with, party with and generally have fun with. It's also nice to have family to share good times with, and help guide through tough times when necessary.

Finally, I'm thankful to each and every one of the people in our (U.S.) armed services that are out laying it all on the line in service to this country, wherever they may be. Its been tough and sad to see more lives lost than many had hoped for, and news reports continue to come out almost daily telling everyone of more people that have sacrificed life and limb to help the cause they are serving for. Were I a younger man (and in better physical condition -- too fat I am), I too might be in the middle of the pile myself. I'm glad there are those that serve, and do it with pride and honor. To them, we should be thankful and should be proud of their service.

Hopefully, as the Christmas holiday approaches, I'll find some more unspent funds in my bank account, and I'll be able to donate it to worthy causes that support our troops and vets. I wish I could do so much more in that area, but resources only go so far (including time).
