BETA for friends.

The title is misleading I know.  I am not talking about extra keys or anything of the sort.  I preordered three copies of BETA for myself and the two others for friends whose birthday it was in hopes others would hop on that bandwagon.  How long do you have to activate your beta?  Because one of them is only interested when the graphics kick in.

Mainly I wanted a group to be able to test BETA with over vent and just have a fun time playing it on vent when the multiplayer phase comes out.  So I hope they have that option for a late registration if not then I have to make them get Imuplse now and register since Beta is due to be released tomorrow.

Hmm, well do we have an IRC channel for the beta? Thats usually a good way to get to know people and if you want to use vent I'm sure someone in there has access to one.

I've tried using IRC with different clients for other games in the past but I've always had a hard time.  Thanks for the suggestion and I will go look up more on IRC after classes.

Though I was able to "push" the game on several of my friends and they pre-ordered or working on pre-ordering.

You could always create their impulse accounts for them and login to setup their beta status. Then when they are ready to play, give them their login info.

A related question - I don't typically buy two copies of games through Stardock.

What's the best process?

I guess the safest way would be to create and order using a second account, but...

I've made 2 pre-orders for SD products in the past, and I was told via IRC that you should contact sales support and have one of them canceled, then 'gift' the pre-order to a friend.   In the case of 3, you'd cancel 2 of them and make 2 gifts.

I would SO be up for joining in on IRC if people had one going.  I guess someone just needs to pick a name and let people know...

EDIT: Haha, whoops.  Apparently there's this thread https://forums.elementalgame.com/328970 where they talk about having an IRC channel already.  Sounds like we should just pop on there.

It would be really cool (possible unrealistic though) if an IRC (or some other form of chat) client could be built into the game interface itself.  Would be a nice option to be able to chat about your game while playing, ask for advice, etc, without the disjoint experience of having to play in a window or constantly alt-tab.

Depending on how things are set up, I could see this either being pretty easy or incredibly hard, though - (Although if it could be set up as the backend to whatever communications system was set up for normal multiplayer it might not be that bad - especially if there's some open source IRC code that could be used under a commercial-friendly license)

I, personally obviously, don't think playing in windowed mode is too bad.  I play window'd in most strat games is possible.

I'm not a big fan of windowed mode, even though I generally do run on a very large monitor...  I just find everything else on the screen to be distracting in a way that it wouldn't be if the communication didn't involve a need to context shift out of the game.

Given that PM08 and Demigod have IRC, it's a fair bet it will.

Grrr.  The gift pre-orders went through already and they aren't even as excited as me, and my pre-order isn't here yet.

SO now I am confused. Soe people seem to be testing already. Is there something we need to do? Will we get an email when we can download our beta or is there something I am completely missing?

That's awesome Kryo - I don't think I ever noticed it in Demigod... (then again, I spend much much more time on the turn based games)
