I have noticed that RtP is not entirely responsive or snappy. It briefly hangs when closing chat windows or the application itself, and it hangs when starting up in order to load user data. Simply put, it feels a bit slow.

I'm not sure if this is a server issue or an application issue. RtP could be hanging in some cases because it is awaiting a response from the server, in which case you might want to consider asynchronous loading. I tested RtP again this morning and it feels much faster than it did during the weekend, so I imagine that the sluggishness I have observed is server-related.

The chat/invite windows seem to be the issue.  Setting up your profile and updating it (or viewing profiles) works fine for me, but sending an invite, adding a friend, closing a chat window and such all result in the program becoming briefly unresponsive.

Actually, no it was not server related.  We added a bunch of asychronous loading in threads!  Good call!

We are adding more threading daily. :-)  Try the latest update tomorrow 0.98 and let us know if you think the chat window is more responsive.
