The mystery of Ralley points?

I have played this game for many years now but i have never been able to crack the mystery of setting ralley points?

 

Many times over the years i have seen this topic discussed in the forum but still, i have never understood how it works? And i have spent many hours studying help files, manuals and looking around in the game but with no success. There is a bit of a 'twist' in the procedure that causes it to remain beyond my grasp?

Recently i have been playing a game where it has become exceedibgly tiresome not having ralley points working, can anyone 'untwist' this mystery for me?

Over on the left next to the place agent icon is an icon that looks sort of like a bullseye with an arrow pointing from it.  Click that and click the map, and it sets a rally point.  You can then send ships straight to the rally point and set colonies to automatically send newly-built ships there.

One of the tutorial videos available from the main menu also covers rally point usage, IIRC.

I have never used rally points personally. I didn't think they were all that useful. It's just another point in space to click on.
