Problems with Elections

All over the world people dispute elections results. Just think about. Everywhere I turn, I'm hearing things about the Election in the Ukrine, the iraqi election, even here. The famous 2000 election; the 2004 election isn't even over. Recounts in ohio, the washington govenership, and several congreesional seats are still disputed and will have a recount. We have to do something about this major world problem. But How?

I'm not really sure just how to fix the problem. But your right, there is one and it needs to be fixed

Also, I think voter moniters- like the UN ones don't cut it. Didn't Bush not let them in in 2002 though?

I have a couple suggestions, nothing that will magically change the world or anything, but:

1) Paper trail - paper trails are necessary for recounts. Any sort of paper trail will back up election results and make sure people know who they voted for and that their vote will be counted. We use a pencil and paper ballot up here in Canada, and our last election went without a hitch (no hanging chads, unverifyable electronic voting machines).

2) Monitors (a neutral one and maybe one from each party) at all polling stations to look out for voting irregularities, and make sure evey vote gets counted.

The paper trail is the key. Here in Iowa we use a fill in ballot that is much like tests people have taken for years. Voting machine can be messed with, but if you have a paper copy, that is indesputable. Iowa has one of the lowest ballot rejection rates in the country.
Each party should already maintain a presence at each polling place. By law they can have a maximum of three representatives per polling place here in Iowa.

I don't think that anything will ultimatly solve voting problems. No matter what after every recount the numbers will be different.

Yes, we do need paper trail. You have it in Iowa, but here in NJ we don't have it, and most states don't.

Only have one political party.

It worked wonders for the old USSR, Nazi Germany, present day Cuba/N. Korean/China and pre-war Iraq. You never here about voting irregularies do ya under a one party system.

That's My Two Cents

Lee, we're getting closer and closer to that every election. Even the democratic candidates are so moderate as to be almost republican.

I don't think that will happen. The Federalist slowly broke down and we only had one party for awhile in the 1800s. Much the same thing is happening to the Democrats now. But in good time another second party will grow out of the Republicans. People in the US has a hard time getting along for long periods of time. I just wished there would be more then just two parties myself, or better yet no parties.
