Question about entrenchment

I tried digging up this info but i cant so decided to post about it.

Are the expansions for Sins of Solar Empire similar to that of Civilization games where they just add features so even the original game experience changes to reflect new features or is it more like games like C&C and Starcraft where the orginal game largely remains the same but the expansion adds a new SP/MP game where the new features are implemented?

I was thinking about the former but the info about Entrenchment keeps saying that its set 15 years after the original game which implies that its more like traditional RTS game expansion!

I just bought original sins of solar empire and am wondering if i should buy the expansion now (as i would with normal turn based strategy games) or should i buy it after i have played the original game (as i would with normal real time strategy games)

its like civilizations

like civilizations there is a vanilia or without the expansion effect which you can go to any time you want and then there is Entrenchment

it is definitely worth buy IMHO as it does add much to the game
