Analyzation of New Pic

... or Admiration, one of the two

I found this pic on brad's blog on impulse about PAX by chance, and i wanted to post it here for anyone who hadn't seen it yet:

I love this screenshot, this game is really shaping up to be amazing imo! I love how the "squadron of basic guards" is relatively proportional to the houses (it always kinda peeved me in Civ when my people were giants...) I don't care what anyone says, these graphics are great and while it is a different art style I totally love the way Stardock is going with it. Keep up the good work guys!

Anyone else have any cool observations about the screenie?

yeah check the stats bar and tabs. Even though the devs hinted at the leveling and abilities of units this offers a nice glimpse into exactly how it will be implemented. Items  Spells:drool: and Actions? what would those be used for? any ideas

Also just found this.

Still think the houses are proportional?

The shot you're referencing Maccilia is significantly older than the shot from brad's blog, but still I'd expect that the unit size to scale up/down based on zoom so that you can more easily select them.

That screenie is old, and the heroes are probably a bit higher to really distinguish them from the rabble, and to literally make them seem like a 'great' person.

Please... It's analysis... Not analyzation...

Man that looks good. Playing on the cloth map is going to be torture.

Yes, though even zoomed in all the way the unit's aren't PERFECTLY in proportion, but it's pretty close.

Oh the horror that we should play with a cloth-map in the beginning... 8O

When I first saw that unitpic I immediately thought "Master of Magic units!"         But then I remembered that you can create as big squads as you want....and I wonder about the XP system. What happens if you combine a 10 man squad with 900 XP and a 100 man squad with 200 XP?

And if we have a single unit that kills a creature worth 10 XP, he gets 10 XP I presume?

What if a squad with 10 guys kills that same creature?   Every guy gets 1 XP?

You're assuming the 'cannon fodder' units are the ones that get the experience  ;)

Time for a bit more of an in-depth look.

  • I love the level of detail on the ground!
  • Wonder what the glowy light thingy next to the attack and defense symbols are..... Magic rating? It's also used in the current level field.... is it EXP?
  • Can't tell what any of the buildings are...... considering the large civ-wide numbers o@ the bottom of the screen and the small size of the town, it's probably a pretty recent addition to a larger faction.
  • Boogie, that sword looks like it has no point..... I know, a little nitpicky thing, but better now than at the game release......

Overall, this is tantalizing, but not terribly informative.

While I love the graphics I am concerned that I will end up playing only on the cloth map.

In GalCiv I would always play zoomed out becuase it was far easier to get an idea for what was going on. The individual unit graphics were just not easy enough to distinguish and some information, like planet quality, was just so much harder to see (at least for me).

I assume in this shot that the blue circle under the units feet is because they are selected. If this is true I am concerned that when they are not selected it will be very hard to tell at a glance which side they are on. On the cloth map I would see a colored symbol which would make it instantly clear what they were and which side they are on.

I hope at somepoint during the beta test there will be an option or build that will disable the cloth map so you can get feedback on how easy/hard it is to play without one.

I will find it difficult to play at any level but this with screenshots like this!

Granted moving big armies around and seeing the strategic level once you have an empire in full bloom will take the cloth map. But getting down to seeing the units in all their glory? The towns, the landmarks and more?

So only heroes and the sovereign can get XP?   I support that. Will keep me from being careful with my units.

Geez I just can't get used to the watercolor graphics, hopefully it will be easier to get into it when you can zoom etc...  The layout looks like a nice updated clone of a MoM tactical screen though so it's got that going for it

I thought the screen of supreme commander 2 was Demigod for a moment.  I was thinking "geeze, they are giving it a pretty massive overhaul."

Boodiebac, are you saying that regular units can not become regulars, veterans or elite units like they could in MoM?

I don't think that was his intention. The screenie clearly shows these regulars can get XP. I guess his point is that these poor units dies so quickly that they seldom get the chance to advance to veteran levels......

I thought the same thing, I thought it was getting a little more than an overhaul :X

Hmm, and very sketchy response Boogie... PAX couldn't get here soon enough ;P

Come to think of it, that is an interpretation that makes way more sense. It is also more fun, so let us hope it is that. :)

I thought he'd meant that it's the leadership of the unit, and not the common manpower, that gets the experience. Every unit has to have someone in charge, right? He's the guy who has the experience.

Extrapolating from that, that means that with the earlier question of what happens when you combine a 10 man squad with 900 experience and a 100 man squad with 100 experience, the result would be a 110 man squad with either 900 or 100 experience, depending on which way they decide to go with this.
