How important is the news?

I was wondering how important it is for me to watch the news, read a newspaper, or even update myself on world events online. It seems like no one is really doing these things anymore. The only people that are doing these things consistently are also building model athearn ho trains in their spare time. Being up to date on international affairs has become something that is primarily left to older generations. My generations, Generation Y, has seemingly made a collective decision to care more about Grey's Anatomy than what is happening in Afghanistan.

I was trying to figure out how this generational shift happened. I decided convenience was certainly a factor. Sometimes it is not convenient to stop and read a newspaper or watch the news. Parents running around chasing kids in Super Why costumes don't nearaly have enough time to sit down and catch up on world events. The time we can steal away from the busyness of the our daily lives often is spent elsewhere, sometimes on more important things. I decided that caring was a larger issue. Some people just do not care about what is going on outside their world. This is the mindset that needs to be seriously challenged. If my generation wants to impact the world then it better begin to understand the rest of the world. There is a lot happening on a daily basis all around the world that goes unnoticed. Even if it means a cnn blackberry app or nytimes iphone app, we need to become involved in knowing about our world that God has placed us in to change.

I find that news is very important in my life. I discovered this about 5 years ago when I was more interested in TV hows like Star Trek TNG and Fraiser and I started blogging and found that blogging gave me the talking I needed that I could not due in the real world. I could not find people who either were interested or up to my level of conversation, especially considering I talk too much sometimes.

Some people would rather avoid the media due to so much BS and bad news out there but ignoring all this BS and bad news can make these people ignorant to the real problems we face these days. Not to mention that if people don't know whats going on, they won't bother to educate themselves about the issues and then these people go out and vote for politicians based of the few ads they see on them, the party they belong to and sometimes a "just to get this over with" attitude. News is good, but it's better whn you make it a point to verify the information yourself rather than accept what the reporter says.
