The Heart of Thanksgiving

What a year! Seperated from my wife of 13 years, living in an apartment, unemployed for 11 1/2 months, at the end of my rope and at the end of my resources. I discovered some things, though. Very important things.

1. Without people who care about me, I would be homeless and begging for food. No doubt. No exageration.

2. Without a purpose in life, there appears to be not much of a reason to go on.

3. Without prayer, there is no hope for things to get better.

4. Without a positive hobby to occupy my mind (in this case, Wincustomize), I would have gone crazy - thinking too much, worrying.

5. Without the Bible, there is no spiritual growth, which is a stagnation more horrible than death.

6. Without God, there is none of the above.

I never missed a meal. I slept under a roof every night. I always had clothes to wear. I was always warm. I was always loved.

I am getting back on my feet again, and am so appreciative to those that helped me through this dark valley. Some were family members, some were friends, and some were people I don't even know on this website who I am now proud to call "friends". But there are people in life who don't have all of these "blessings" and are always hungry, always cold, always alone. When I think about it, I am undone, ... feel like I am coming apart at the seams. How do they have the strength to survive? Where do they get their grit and determination when my "inconveniant" circumstances almost led me to despair.

So here it is; the heart of the matter: God has given me this life to manage ... for a reason.
My prayer is that I can use the resources that He has entrusted me with, to help those who do not have, who are alone, who are in need more than me. Whether it is an unknown person on the street in need of a ride, or a shelter for the homeless, or just a person at work that needs help with something. My new motto is "I'm here for you!!"
Jim Elliot said "He is no fool who loses what he cannot keep, in order to gain that which he cannot lose".
I want to be the type of person that can lay down my life for another.
I want to be the type of person that makes a difference in someone's life, whether I get the credit or not. That's my goal.

I'm not sure this is what was intended by this "article" page, but I wanted to share a thread of my life with you.

Thanks for listening.

I have been there and also found strength and support from least expected places. I developed the attitude of "pass it on". When back on my feet with regained sanity, several times now I've had the opportunity to "pass on" the help to others that was given to me. Sleeping Dragon, thanks for sharing, your thread is one from the fabric of life.

Wow. I don't know what to say. One thing I will say is this. I doubt if I'm one of the people who made a difference for you, but for some reason, whenever I logged on here at WC I always checked for your comments on my work. For some reason I appreciated your comments that much more. Now I see that God was urging me to keep an eye on you. I remember being saddened when you said you wouldn't be around WC anymore, and I couldn't understand why. But I'm a devoted Christian, and I know that God does strange things sometimes, and I guess He was telling me, hey, this SD guy needs your 'thank yous' even though it seemed like nothing at the time.

I know that it has been some time since you wrote this, and I hope you will see this. I just had to let you know that I spent 3 years eating, paying bills, land payments and buying groceries without a job or car. God is very powerful. I am not able to explain that to people who do not know him. You know him. He is the only reason I was able to make it. I know how powerful Prayer and Faith are. Without that I would have lost all hope and killed myself. But God always made a way. Either through friends or complete strangers. My ex just went to work one day and never came home. Now many years later I have my soul mate, the greatest man I have ever known. He has adopted my 29 year old daughter, and I have never been happier in my life. I thank God for what I went through. It has made me who I am today. A very thankful and greatful person who tries to always be positive and faithful. Thanks for your story SD. It made me so happy to know how much God does for those who believe. God Bless.

Smile!

I see it, and I thank you. God is good all the time. Sometimes it's hard for me to have eternal vision, but in those rare instances when I do, it all makes sense and I am on the verge of tears of gratitude.

Thanks Cindi!

I really can't say much to this thread SD. I barely know you but you are willing to open yourself to the world. The things you write on these pages have a profound impact on the lives of others. God is using you, your life, and your willingness to be open to reach people like myself and stir me in my complacency. I'm 27 and have only just devoted my life to Him. I read about your life (above) and want to pray for you as you are considering others and praying for them. If my faith was as yours is... I promise that you will be in my prayers SD.

I know i'm a newbie in life and i have no equal knowledge, and my 20 years in life cannot match the experience you have taken from it and most probably i haven't got the equivelent of maturity to understand what you have been through my friend, but i can still pray for you and all others that you find your way to happiness and inner balance again. And from what i see you have found the path to light...

The wise man said just walk this way
To the dawn of the light
The wind will blow into your face
As the years pass you by
Hear this voice from deep inside
It's the call of your heart
Close your eyes and your will find
The passage out of the dark

Here I am
Will you send me an angel
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

The wise man said just find your place
In the eye of the storm
Seek the roses along the way
Just beware of the thorns

Here I am
Will you send me an angel
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

The wise man said just raise your hand
And reach out for the spell
Find the door to the promised land
Just believe in yourself
Hear this voice from deep inside
It's the call of your heart
Close your eyes and your will find
The way out of the dark

Here I am
Will you send me an angel
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

To SD, I was a born-again christian for 6 years but the last year and a half I kinda backslid from God. I let the world take me from my first love Jesus Christ but since I came here and have saw and read the things you have said and also the kind words you have spoken to me,on this site and devart I am getting back on the path which God has intended for me and he has used you to show me
the way, Thank you and God bless you, SD!!

Perhaps SD should consider returning to the seminary that he left in his youth? just a thought: I'll keep you in prayer....

I don't think I could be in the spotlight as a pastor. I have a few more weaknesses than a congregation would like to see in a shepherd (and I like beer, too.) My heart is not in the pastorate, but thanks for the thought and I always appreciate prayer. My current purchasing job is not my niche either, though. God has something in mind for me and will reveal it in His time. Thank you, sapphira, for being concerned about the needs of others!!

When I read gooberbean28's comments, it echoed what I have been thinking since I have visited the site. You stand out SD and bear His image well in the forums, and that is why I stay. I like the chat. (Still trying to get my wife to let me get OD! )That you not called to be a Pastor or to your current job is fine. You are right, he will place you where he needs you. Seems to me you are doing his work even now.

I think some people like to see their Pastors are human. I think some Pastors should drink beer! (Just gotta be sober thats all). My prayers are still with you friend. Don't know why but He keeps bringing you to mind.

God bless and keep the faith

I just listened to a ministry tape today entitled "Your God Ordained Place", and it ministered to me tremendously. The teaching is that God has a place for each of us in His mind "before the foundations of the world", and we will not be happy or effective when we are out of that place. I never meant to imply that pastoring is the only way to minister: as a matter of fact, I personally believe that more are saved one-on-one, and ministered to as well. People who need God the most will likely never darken the doors of a church, and we must be where they are, which you are apparently doing quite excellently. At my alma mater [Lehigh U] there is actaully a plaque in the chapel honoring the faithful service of a janitor who worked there 40 years or so. In our minds, that is just as important and honorable as being the Dean of one of the colleges if that is what one is called to do. [Wouldn't want to be without one, would you?]

I would also like to say that sometimes God allows you to bring yourself to a place where there is nowhere else to go but Him [He is not the author of failure and loss]. At this place, He wants to place you back where you need to be. It just seemed to me that your circumstances are pretty much this phenomena, but that's not a bad thing! Rejoice b/c He is bringing you back where you belong!

Anyway, on your journey towards Him you have my prayers & support. And don't get too caught up in the beer thing: that's a side issue, actually. I have often been both highly amused and deeply shamed by Christians who loudly denounce alcohol, only to run over the toddlers at church to get to the finger foods before anyone else. This is the same root problem, actually. It's just a socially acceptable form. And, I enjoy a glass of wine with my dinner as well.

Well, I've never been a typical anything, and I see no reason to start now

Blessings & regards...

How encouraging it is to see believers such as yourselves who are not ashamed. I appreciate your words more than you know and have found an extreme amount of enlightenment from this thread today. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. The one really cool thing to me is that I absolutely know that I am going to meet all of you one day. I can't wait (but will)!!

I'm a bit ... uh, at a loss what to say (hard to believe, I know).

just
...thank you!

Words aren't necessary: I already know. We're just passing on what has already been richly given to us. You're more than welcome, SD!
