This is a thought provoking article on Vista. A good read.

The only reason I have Vista is because it came with a computer from a shop.
After holding my hands on my head waiting for a simple file copy to transfer from one drive to another. Don't get me started with the desktop graying out for a agonizing amount of time while I was trying to load a program. I wanted to install XP within a few weeks.

The experience was so bad I now only run Vista on one of my four computers and thats a dual boot.

I must admit with the service packs installed and with all of the upgrades Vista is not half bad.
Windows 7 will be a vast improvement and I am counting down the days. Who knows the dual boot might just become a single :thumbsup:

At this point in time, no matter how thought provoking an article, should we care?  I think I will care if Win 7 runs into the same problems which would mean that Microsoft didn't learn any lessons.  No, I didn't read the link, I'm running Vista Home Premium with the service packs and don't have any problems.

I really don't think there is much a chance that Win 7 won't live up to the expectations for it, especially when you read the comments by community members in forums threads posted here.

Just my opinion, and I'm sorry to say I haven't been right much lately. :O :-" :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

I hated Vista at first. I beta tested it and swore I would keep my XP as long as I could. Then I bought a new PC and tried to put XP on it, and was told there were no drivers for XP for my particular PC.      Bummer!! 

But I finally gave in and guess what? I like Vista pretty well. But I am liking 7 pretty well too. Dual boots are in my future for a good while yet.

I tried vista ultimate... twice.... first for a couple of months next time maybe 6 months... im on XP now... vista was a bad dream.. with for me only 2 positive things and that was how it handled the RAM and its networking.

Have not tried 7 yet but all ive heard are pretty much only good things.

Vista's been great for me, though if I recall so was XP, in fact I don't think any problem I've had with a computer has been anything more than a minor anoyance that a bit of reading and common sense could remedy. And when I compare the time it takes to do that with living in a world of paying retail venders rent and twenty cents for five minutes of double dragon, I figure I'm in front.

Microsoft, I salute thee.

I've had three problems with Vista, two of which can be turned off, and the third has a simple work-around. Much better than XP where I had to reformat every six months or have it blue-screen every day.

As I said the other day Vista has caused many issues and people's faith in MS has waivered. Will we have to see how Windows 7 will do.

Are they going to name Windows 7 something else?

Nope they are not.

To be fair I don't understand all the Vista trash talking happening today. Yes, the launch was a mess, I'd say 75% external from companies that refused to make some decent drivers, and 25% MS' problem with some silly bugs. It wasn't much fun, but also not that big of a deal. I have started to use Vista regularly after SP1 came out, and I have to say that it is a pretty solid system. It may not be the fastest OS out there but it does its job well enough. So I really don't get why people still call Vista a mistake. If you patch the OS up to date then you have a great OS on your PC. Windows 7 even makes it all just that tad bit better and smoother. They are both great solid OS's (for the average user anyway).

name it something else? why would they do that? have they not based all their advertising around the name 'windows 7'?

as for vista, too many machines were not capable hardware-wise to run vista when vista was first released. that's is a major reason people complained about it at first. the same thing happened when xp was released. personally, i had been using vista ultimate 64 since the day it was released and never regretted it a second. the only issue i had with it was hp hadn't released a driver for my laser printer. i had to purchase a second printer to use for 4 or 5 weeks until the driver i needed was released. that wasn't microsoft's problem. that was hp not being ready.

i've now switched to windows 7 and love it. i have ultimate on the desktop and pro on the laptop. the laptop seems as though it's a brand new lappy now. being able to use all my ram is nice. (and yes, my windows 7 copies are legit)

I'd say the article is pretty well on target - I remember anticipating some of the issues when they first came out (What, *Six or Seven* versions? I can't remember all seven DWARVES! Whatever middle manager from marketing hell came up with that idea should have been shot just for suggesting it.)

Some of it could've been anticipated but wasn't their *fault* as such, the "Vista Capable" stuff, WinFS (Which even *I* thought would be really cool) not making the grade, et al. A lot of it was just general 'trickle' effect - after awhile you look at Vista and go "What is it *this* time?"

For me it was the kowtowing to DRM in Vista. When it came time to get a next gen system, Ubuntu was available, did everything I wanted in Vista, with none of the hassle.
