Korx and very slow tech FTW

Here is another stragety.  I havent actually tried it yet, but it seems pretty reasonable to me.

Play your next game as the Korx and set your tech speed to very slow.  With the Korx you're going to get master trade to start with, and your opponents will be probably a year out before they can match you in trade.

That should give you a devistating advantage economically in your first year.  You'll be able to run your economy very hot, putting in planet upgrades long before you have the population (planet income) to support it.

Thoughts?  Does the AI on suicidal cheat too much for this strategy to be effective?

Yes.

For example, the Yor start with ion engines.  Between them and the other race or races that can colonize non-standard worlds, they will colonize the map and grow large tax-paying populations, much-much-much larger than yours.

Another possibility on my list to try is the slowest research rate with a very high research race starting from a 7x research planet.  Just maybe one could get ahead of them that way, but they will still flood the map while you research.

Well you can play with almost no non-standard worlds, which will limit their ability to out colonize you.  If you want you can play a very overpopulated map where there are very few planets per civ.

I've just tried this strategy for about a year and what I found was that on suicidal difficulty the oppoenents appeared to cheat so badly that their tech was so far beyond mine I was hoplessly lost.

I just dont see how you can win with the AI out producing you, out researching you, and out earning you so easily.

Perhaps I'm still too new to the game and dont have all the tricks but right now, despite my best efforts, the AI far out develops me on suicidal.

You must be talking about TA.  I do not recall being able to control the number of non-standard planets in DA.

There have been several threads lately by us relative newcomers on the difficulty of winning at Suicidal, though the "old hands" have their ways.

If I get desperate for any kind of win at Suicidal, what I might do is select the fastest research rate game choice, get a 7x research tile on my homeworld, max all research racial choices, limit myself to the first two new colonies, produce nothing, and try to go straight for a research win.  I'm not quite that desperate yet, though.
