The Quest Log Book

One feature I found fun within AgeofWonders:ShadowMagic was where the player could review his relations with each race.  The fun feature was after completing a few special quests it would update the relation view describing what improved the relations.  Now with Elemental I would like to see this expanded into providing a Quest Log Book.  It would not only provide a list of the current quests, but also a list of the completed quests and the reward received.

Ideally I would like the option for players to be able to send quests to other players which would also appear in the Quest Log Book.  The reward offered can be adjusted by the game to make sure other players don't offer empty quests.

EXAMPLES:

    Current Quests:

   1) Slay the Troll Lord of the Forest Gorcek                        Reward:  Average Unknown

   2) Assassinate hero Clevelond belonging to player 4          Reward:  200 gold and Longsword of Ice

    Completed Quests:

   1) Rebuilt the Lighthouse on Skull Isle                              Reward:  Morale Bonus +5 for your town Fazelwool

   2) Rescued princess Arelia from the Dungeon of Ramez      Reward:  Necklace of Haste and +5 bonus with lizardmen relations

Excellent. Why not expand this into other areas, such as research, battles, and production?

Definitely...  I provided a few examples, but the list can be enormous.

After a game has ended the player could also review his list of accomplished quests.

Better yet, allow the player to save the whole lot as a text file, for the purposes of AARs.

This is dangerously close to a subject that makes Scott have a conniption, so I won't say the 'bad words,' but I will say that GC2 made some solid advances on UI-accessible event logging through the expansion packs.

I'm convinced that a rich event log with appropriately flexible hooks could be a major factor for both increasing immersiveness in canon sandbox games and helping modders create very strong homage projects for their favorite fantasy novels and films.

Connections between the event log and the quest system seem especially worthwhile to this non-coder, and creating Annals UI should be considerably easier than making another attempt at You-Know-What. You wouldn't need to auto-generate sentences, just link some in-game dates and unit names to the canned blurb for the quest.

Indeed, we shouldn't talk about the Epic story gene.... Oops... O:) I mean off-course You-Know-What... But anyway, a quest-log linked to the event logging (Which was already mentioned I think) sounds very reasonable and I wouldn't be surprised if it is already on the todo-list...

1) Rebuilt the Lighthouse on Skull Isle

I still say it looks like a duck.
