FTP problems :(

OK, here goes. MY girlfriend is having roblems with FTP, she can access her ftp thingy and she can upload files, however she can not download files, it keeps timing out when she tries. This problem only happens at home and it works fine everywhere else (work, other peoples houses etc.) so im guessing something is set wrong on our router maybe?

Can anyone help?

I always thought that the ftp thingy was for transferring files to one's own web page and a browser would be used to download files or whatever.

I have encountered "timed out" issues before that had to do with a cookie thingy. usually this occurred when I was transferred to another page (usually a secured page) and the transferring data was not transferred along as my cookie settings are rather strick and wouldn't allow third party cookies.

make sure your router, firewalls, and ISP are not blocking incoming FTP requests on port 21.  generally that is the default port used for FTP services.  typical router setups will allow usage of port 21 when the connection is started inside the network.  so unless you changed something i would suspect the ISP or a Windows firewall issue.

I had this same issue, and when I tested my ISP connection at http://www.speedtest.net/ I found that my download speed was only .20 Mbits, when it should have been almost 2 Mbits.  I had to contact my ISP to fix the problem, took them 5 days, but they found and fixed the problem.
