Fences after August 31

What will happen?

It says in the About page that the community preview will end on the 31st of August. What happens after that?

And you can't seriously trademark the word "Fence", can you?

I'd guess it goes into a pay model...

BTw "Windows" is trademarked, is it not?

You can trademark it in-context :) After that the free version will remain free and there will also be a pro version available. Kindof like ObjectDock and ObjectDock Plus.

What will the Pro version feature? Will it address compatibility with other Stardock items. For example, I want to use IconX for the transparent icon labels, but Fences disappear when I do.

FENCES - it's nice - but - it doesn't come close to ObjectBar. This application is miles more efficient in managing your desktop than Fences. I will never replace ObjectBar with Fences...! As far as I'm concerned, nothing outdoes ObjectBar - what an exceptional application...!

Yeah, I like the ObjectBar developer WAY more than the Fences guy anyway... ;)

So I've just tried to update Fences because it says there's an update available, but every time I try to do that it keeps saying that there is an error. Does anyone know the reason for this?

EDIT: Seems to have updated now...

Mine has updated, but now it shows a strange error-ish message when starting and when clicking "Edit Fences":

---------------------------

Fences

---------------------------

As noted during download, this community preview beta of Fences was set to expire on November 1st 2009.

Please visit http://labs.stardock.com/Fences to obtain the latest version. Thank you for participating in the Fences beta!

(Fences will now run in reduced functionality mode until updated or uninstalled.)

---------------------------

OK

---------------------------

Correct me if I am wrong, but it is not after November 1st, 2009, is it?!

Yes I just updated and am now getting that same error message on startup.

It also never used to be a "community preview beta", I seem to remember it being released as free software originally.-_-

Yup, getting the same pop-up here. I've checked my time and date settings and it's correct, so something is telling Fences that it's past november 1st. That said, I have no idea what "Reduced Functionality" means in this case. It works like it used to, there's nothing missing as far as I can tell.

If it's any help, I'm running a Danish version of Vista Home Premium and updated Fences today.

About it being a Community Beta, I think that was there in the previous version, too. I seem to remember thinking that it worked pretty well for a Beta and that if it ever became a paid program, I'd likely upgrade to the full version. I don't need a big desktop theme, but a lightweight app like Fences is perfect.

Same message here as well - hope an admin weighs in on this one.

Same thing here, when I ran Impulse there was an update notification next to Fences, updated, rebooted and now I'm receiving the same message everyone else is getting.

Here's hoping for a quick fix.

If Fences is giving you greif,
Don't worry, because I'll be breif.
An update is coming
That clears up the plumbing.
So stay tuned for news of relief.

Fences is now working great.
Just update it in Impulse and wait.
When it's done, you'll agree
There's no message to see
Now we're sure that we have the right date.

Thanks, Rosco_P (coltraine right?) for giving us "Fence Sitters" a little humor in our updates.
