Proxies are acting up again

A few weeks or maybe a month or two ago now proxied connections were sporadically giving extremly high pings which slowed down games if you didn't rejoin and get a different proxy. Then, without any fanfare, they just started working again after a week or so.

The same thing is happening again for me and a handful of people I've talked to in game.

So basically the idea is I'll enter a game, have several proxied connectins, and the majority will be at a reasonable, sub 300 ping. However there's almost always one that's 700+ and to fix it I have to rejoin the game. The problem is that I have to reshuffle all my proxies so previously good connections can end up at 700+, which makes rejoining to fix the issue impractical in larger games. These high pings are not just a display issue, they accurately reflect the lag I then see in game.

Is anyone else having these issues and is there a fix/workaround?

Yes ive been experiencing the same, pings of about 800+ to random people.

Sometimes when they reconnect its gone.

It's very anoying because in most of the games you start noticing it when the game has begun.

Just avoid/kick players with proxies is my advice.

Yep, something is wrong with the proxies again.

This is a poor solution given how many people use proxies.

And is something wrong with the stats? Every game record I've seen lately contains only 1 person.

I agree with you, and it's not a solution at all. But it's the only way to play a decent game atm.

Some noobish questions here if u guys don't mind:  proxy servers in DG are used only for Custom games, right?  And, what kind of connection/performance improvements/fixes does this give over DG's standard P2P?  Thanks in advance.

Found this post, but it didn't have quite all the info I was hoping for: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/354817

No, proxies are generally used for all connections, regardless of Custom, Pantheon or Skirmish. A proxy is used if a player can't establish a connection to another player.

Or, you could maybe ask everyone if they see ok pings? Even when the are screwy, most of them still work fine. I proxy and I've played several decent games today.

This. If someone is mute and has proxy connections, then by all means kick them. However I play with proxies pretty much every game for some reason and I'm very attentive when it comes to identifying connection issues.

When the proxy servers are working correctly you wouldn't be able to tell a difference between a direct conneciton and a proxy. The fix it provides is that apparently there are some players you just wouldn't normally be able to connect to at all.

I'm having this problem as well.  Just popped in the last couple of days.

EDIT:  Funny thing is, I just did a test- if I join a game in Australia, the proxy pings are reasonable (~250).  I live in NYC, so I wonder if people are in the Northern hemisphere are being rerouted to Australian proxy servers right now.

Just piping in to say I'm also having this issue. Any proxy connections I have are returning pings of 700-800 where proxies were fine before!

V. annoying as it makes it hard to even find a 2v2 without proxies.

same problems 700-950ms proxies, rejoin fixes (sometimes)... any permanent fixes?

I brought this up after the thread started yesterday, but we had to wait until off-peak hours to kick the servers. Are they still being troublesome today?

Thanks, Kryo, for the quick response.

I just tried some tests again with /serverproxyonly as of 11:15 US EST (I'm in NYC).  I'm still getting pings in the 600+ range, especially if connecting to people in Europe.  Connections to the US are in the 400+ range.  Connections to Aus are in the 200-400 range.  All of this is unusual, since before a few days proxies seemed to be in the 150-300 range.

Thanks for looking into it!

It appears they're still doing it as of just a minute ago. I'm about 10 minutes west of Kansas City if that matters.

Does anyone here know what router settings might force one to use proxies more? I'm completely unable to play without them.

If the kick didn't help, we have some tweaks on track for the coming hotfix that should. Not sure if it'll make it before the weekend though.

I'm still having problems with the proxies too, ping isn't guaranteed to be bad if connected via proxy, but still finding pings of 800+ via proxy a common occurance and fairly randomly (for example played via proxy with someone today with average ping of 300ish, next lobby connected to him at 900 stable).

On a slight side note any idea why I appear to be connecting to other users via nat/proxy a lot more regularly than other players? Direct connections certainly aren't out of the ordinary but in a 3v3 I find I'm connected via proxy to on average 2 of other players.

I've been having issues with 1 player out of a 3v3 having 600+ ping to me.  Everybody else is in an 80-140 range.  If the game starts, the lag is almost unbearable, and the ping stays constant.  Most of the connections I make are thru proxies, but not by my choice.  Is there a way to specify NAT connect only??  I'm going to switch routers to see if that helps.

BTW, I don't seem to have the 1 high ping player problem when I host.

From what I've seen today, the proxy situation has only been getting worse. Now pretty much every other proxy screws up,

I dunno if this helps, but I logged onto the demo to see how proxies were working there and they seemed to be functioning great for me at least. I didn't actually play any games (no sense in driving people away from the game) but I was hovering around 120 on the half dozen proxied connections I tried.

It's still happening (in the regular game).

played 3 pantheon games today, all 3 I had 800ms to at least one player :(
massive headache playing with that kind of lag
also I do not use the /serverproxyonly tag or whatever it is

I had mixed results today. I haven't been able to play at all since the issue started, but today I did get into a few games where the proxy connections were what you'd expect them to be, although there were still a good number of high ones.

Pantheon just isn't an option at the moment if you depend on proxies a lot. :/

WORKAROUND

If you normally don't connect to proxies you can have someone else in your game rehost. Once the game is hosted by someone else, you can join the game for a (possible) direct connection. As far as I can tell, rejoining does not always work.

This works for people who aren't the host but still have issues connecting to each other and don't usually require proxy connections.
