Introducing A Skinner’s World

Introducing A Skinner’s World

The Skinning.net Community Project

http://www.skinning.net/nexus/news.php

sdn banner

2of3 and I were chatting a while back about a new WindowBlinds skin for SDN.
We came up with some ideas and bounced them around to a few people, and the community project idea was set.
The purpose of the project was to design a suite by SDN members to promote this great site and as a tribute of the dedication
SK Originals, Hankers & WOM made throughout the skinning community.
Many of the graphics for the project were inspired by the site and were done by 2of3 before the team was assembled.
With a very talented team assembled the project started in March.
The release was pushed back in order to make the suite the best that it can be.
I have found that Skinning.net means a lot to the project team members. Most of them can tell you the first time SK Originals helped them with a skin. Some can tell you when they had be to set back on the straight and narrow by WOM, as well tell you of the guidance that he and Hankers has given to them. This is a complete suite of skins done by very talented people. I want to thank them all for their contributions and patience.

They're not... I believe there's currently 2 community projects going on here at WC......and I've participated in 3 others in the last couple years........this one just happened to be put together by (and for) skinning.net

Edit: feel free to start a new one......

so I guess it is a commercial site that is using pre-existing (and a little new) work to attract users(?). it's not really a mirror site but a take off of WC and is looking to use an unoriginal idea(s) to gain advertising share. (just stating the obvious right?)

I think (therefore I'm screwed) that I get all of that here but without the ads. I will look at the tutorials to see if there is anything new, but...

good luck with your financial endevor.

What would be the point of doing a tribute suite for the members and administrators of skinning.net here?

I find your remarks more than just a bit offensive :banhammer:

I'll chalk it up to ignorance

gmc2 it would appear that you don't really understand the concept of the WinCustomize Community or how big it is.

Skinning.Net is part of the WC Community, as are other sites, where most of the skinners here also upload thier skins.  With a little effort on your part you can find these sites.  Not sure what your defination of a commercial site is but all you need to do is register at these community sites and have the ability to download skins.  From what I have seen registration is free.

If you would like some help in finding these Community sites try clicking the Help tab at the top of this page.  Click on Community and then find Community Links and then click that.

gmc2 ....looking at your user ID number I would have thought you would already be aware of all the OTHER skinning sites 'out there'....where just about every skinner here is also a member.

Sometimes the nicks are different [eg mine at Deviantart is 'the-Jafo' 'cos a gamer got in there first and took mine] .... but usually a skinner's works will be posted on several or all of the community sites as well.

As Philly stated...just pop on those links and check them out......it's a great big world out there...;)

good luck with your financial endevor.

No one has gained any financial wealth by doing this!!

I thought I did it because I wanted to support a site/group of people that have supported me. :-"

In fact if you want to compare Wincustomize and skinning.net, you'll realize that SDN is much less commercial than here. Nothing is for sale there.

Nothing is for sale there.

Well, if the price is right ..... Nah ...... bad idea

what's the point of skinning.net at all? (sorry, I couldn't resist, tongue in cheek to get a rise) look, get offended, get nasty, become unglued, call me names, insult my parentage, whatever...

I find your remarks more than just a bit offensive

2of3, kind of thin skinned aren't we. To respond in kind would be like shooting fish in a barrel. I'll give you a "poor baby" karma point instead, maybe that will mollify you somewhat.

Skinner.net for skinners, good. I would assume that the tutorials are geared for those that already skin, you know, some advance content. Hopefully I'm shooting myself in the foot here, speaking without checking first that is, I'm pretty famous for that. Anyhow, tutorials about how to make back reflected globes used as the start button, effective use of masks to alter transparency, making rounded corners look like rounded corners, working with alpha channels, etc. I would also assume that these tutorials will take into account the various graphics programs (photoshop, paint shop, etc.)

So, when I find the time to check it out, I will and get back to you.

well, that didn't take long.

tutorials indicate they are for SKS5...

tutorials are from WC including comments from WC customers, so I guess you're a part of SD otherwise it might be inappropriate to hijack comments, without permission.

you need to check this link, honest

and you were saying?

gmc2, no offense but I think your way off base... This suite wasn't put in motion for any financial gain,

I'm probably pretty close in saying that no one who took part made a single penny. The participant's all took part I'm guessing in the true spirit of 'community' the smaller community of Skinning.net and the larger one of WC, which both really crossover.

Some folks may also refer to it negatively as a 'clique', personally I think thats bs, all communities, of the skinning variety or not have groups of folks that interract more with certain people than they may others, Thats life... thats human.... imo.

Skinning.net has done a fine job accomodating that 'itch' for some folks, it is a good site with some great people\skinners and has been around a long time. I can assure you any monetary returns it gets are minimal, I know this as I own a similarly structured site.

lastly, you have been asking a lot recently as far as tutorials go, or complaining of the lack thereof, any sort of 'advanced' tutorials are a commitment in time, thought and effort and will, or will not be posted by those of us with the knowledge, when and if we have the time or motivation to do so. You are coming off in someway as entitled to knowledge that would otherwise only be volunteered by others.

My advice.. step back, look at the bigger picture...check.. then speak... and try to refrain from insulting long time members when at all possible.

your link is also incorrect.

I'm a member at skinning.net.  There are good people there.  They make good skins.

The nicest thing about SDN is that it *IS* smaller than WC.  Everyone seems to know everyone else and the complement each other and each other's work.

The more skinning sites that exist the better it is for all skinning and skinners.

Wimpy/gmc2 . . I'm surprised at your exclusionary attitude. What is your goal in this thread?

I believe that gmc2 has accomplished what he set out to do.

This thread was an announcement about the release of a Community Suite from the member skinners at Skinning.Net, who are also part of the bigger WC Community.  gmc2 took over the tread and made it about him, and most of use took the bait, hook, line and sinker.  Yes we were coming to the defense of our fellow community members.  Sometimes you can't see the troll until you take the bait.

The things some folks will do just to grab attention. :S

I mean no disrespect to anyone and I acknowledge the accomplishments of those involved, this is not personal.

This suite wasn't put in motion for any financial gain,

I never mentioned the suite, the suite has nothing to do with the OP.

I can assure you any monetary returns it gets are minimal, I know this as I own a similarly structured site.

granted, but which is desired for the site to operate. I don't know the formula or how it's handled and I assume it has to do with numbers.

You are coming off in someway as entitled to knowledge that would otherwise only be volunteered by others.

John, this is not about me, this is about the community. this is about those pioneers, of which you are one, graciously imparting their hard won knowledge with the rest of us. I generally get my answers in the forums. I just think that sharing will ultimately provide more technically correct submissions thus perpetuating the skinning process.

and try to refrain from insulting long time members when at all possible.

there is no disrespect intended, this is about principles, not personalities.

your link is also incorrect.

yea, what, you expect me disagree. I respect all of them and even like a few. what are you attempting to imply, that I'm putting the individuals involved down, that's ridiculous.

The more skinning sites that exist the better it is for all skinning and skinners.

not if it's mostly rehash of what is already out there.

I'm surprised at your exclusionary attitude. What is your goal in this thread?

I think the original point was one of disappointment. the site is touted as my first stop in skinning and at the moment isn't true. then I got pissed by some of the responses. Both of you have suggested to step back and that was my intention, it just didn't work out that way.

Oh, and I plan to join, if they'll still have me.

gmc2 took over the tread

damn, you are correct, it did happen, and I do apologize.

Wrong. The suite IS the point of the OP, and the skinners who spent their time making it.

Most of the skinners on Skinning.net are also members of wincustomize. but that's not all. I'm for one member of skinartistry, skinbase, crystalXP, deviantart, the skinning suite, and fews others. It's my choice to decide in wich site i'll share my stuff and there are only two in that list wincustomize and skinning.net.

Most of the skinners do like me and share their stuff on the site they are involving on. So expect to see the same work again and again in all these site ;)

But this suite has been created for Skinning.net as a community(not only this site or another but all cause the community is the skinners) project.

Everything should have been uploaded on Skinning.net but due the size of certain skins like the IP or screensaver some has been uploaded here.

Anyhow a WC new would have been writen even if every skin'd been on skinning.net. Because WE are a COMMUNITY.

Now Let's move on and back to the original topic. And again i'm glad to be a part of this project and of this community.
