Say goodnite Dan (Rather)

Say goodnite Dan (Rather)

(but why make us wait?, and worse...)

DrudgeReport.com is linking an article from ABC News that indicates that Dan Rather is out as anchor of CBS Night News as of March of 2005.

Unfortunately (from my perspective) that gives him about 4 more months of potentially tainted news reports and obvious anti-Bush bias to try to put out more bad news about the Bush administration. Thankfully there will not be an election during that time frame.

Meanwhile, on the worse side of it, it seems that he will not be stepping away from reporting for 60 Minutes II (or 60 Minutes, Wednesday or whatever day they run it on). Since that's where his problems with the obvious Bush bashing started, I still don't see this as an adequate response to the botched story that used the fradulent -- ooops, lets use Rather's favored wording: un-supportable -- and discredited documents.

I got a bridge to sell ya right over here.

what i am saying is that over the past several years (your vietnam info is from 5 years ago) there is considerably more openness than ever before.

Please provide me a link to their changing to media access policies, because I spent time looking for my links and could only find the same info at three other sites.

if so, you heard him say that, unlike the then-unamed westerners who showed up in the village and left when the villagers told him their story, he felt obligated to report what theyd found no matter which side the villagers remembrances supported.

You don't have to be smart to look right through that governmental line, from the local (most likely imported) party official.

I would think you would be choking on that sinker by now.

A few year ago I had an English teacher that said to analyze all news information with an open mind. Since then I look at both sides of a coin and make an informed dissection. I have also taken a journalism class that was recommended to me by a radio newsman that I play historical miniatures games with (I had an elective to fill). This was one of the most informative classes I ever took, because it highlighted every dirty trick in the book that journalist use. (and I thought car salesmen were bad) After that class I take all news programs with a grain of salt (to include Shane Hanaty, Dan Rather, Ted Koppel, ect...). It can be very hard for a person with open eyes to dissect the truth sometimes. But I understand by looking back at the time before my eyes were open how a person can be suckered by a man in a nice suit.

Of all the people that I respect Tim Russert if by far the best news commentator that is out there. You should have heard him having Edwards and the Beer magnet Coors from CO. running in circle earlier this year, on a program that they knew what the subject was going to be.

To bring this back to Dan Rather's much needed retirement. At one time I would have agreed with you that Ran Rather and Ted Koppel were good news sources (even if they only report liberal causes). But after this down and dirty election year they have both let their desire to make political statements cloud their good ethics. You must admit that both have enough experience and knowledge to know how to successfully put lipstick on a pig. But the advent of the blogging society have made it much easier to wipe that lipstick off the pig and the smile off of their faces.

That's My Two Cents

P.S. I think if CBS could steal Brit Hume to replace Rather, this would be a good step at returning ratings to their network news division. Hell, I mostly only want to hear Andy Roony now days. After he retires I don't think I'll ever watch 60 minutes again.

ill give ya what ive found on current vietnam policies (i forgot to bookmark it or copy it so its back to the drawing board). both china and vietnam have--independently--changed markedly over the past two years.

koppel is one of the few celelbrity journalists i trust--in large part because ive been on the periphery of situations that were the subject of three pieces hes done.  compared to other broadcast journalists, his coverage was the most accurate in terms of the facts as i knew them first hand and he also seemed to have a much clearer understanding of the underlying issues. no tv coverage ever comes close to print news sources of course.

one of the things that amazes me about hume (as well as the 8 or 9 odd refugees from the major networks--mostly abc i guess) is how quickly they went from being fairly objective correspondents to clearly partisan exponents on cnn, fox, etc.  the discovery channel, history channel, tlc and a&e apparently purchased a lotta abc and cbs investigative pieces dating back to the 70s and many of those same guys--jeff greenwood, hume, etc--wrote, produced and/or narrated them.   because theyre so frequently churned even now,  they get a lotta play so the contrast is very apparent.  cracks me up.
