GalCiv AI weaknesses

Hey guys,

The AI in GalCiv is one of the best in strategy games. But to help make the AI in GalCiv2 even better, maybe it would be helpful if we all list some of the weak spots we've discovered during intensive Galciv play . My comments are based on the AI at bright level, examples are from the AP campaign.

Here's a few:
-AI doesn't know how to handle ships tactically. In my it doesn't matter if the AI can out-produce me, because when it is attacking it will often just send its ships at me in a line formation rather than in a concentrated group, making them easy to destroy. In the AP campaign I watched the Altarians try to take a Torian world with a huge force of Paladins, Phoenixes, dreadnaughts and so on. The Torians had just a few Dreadnaughts and planetary defenses. They were able to hold it because the Altarians send their ships in one by one, allowing the Torians to repair. Personally I got tallies like "1000 enemy ships destroyed, 50 ships lost".

-In the same scenario I tried to harass the computer using high-power ships for raids. I kept on destroying their starbases and after a while had an Avatar or Paladin in every sector sitting next to starbases. But the silly comp just kept sending those constructors there for me to destroy. It also sent phoenixes against my ships one by one every few turns. Here too, it should have "seen" that it was just wasting money and switched tactics.

-Allies are weird. Even if we were outgunned, the Altarians refused to trade techs allowing us to build better ships. Allies really should be more willing to trade tech in a fair trade, even tech that allows the building of better ships. Maybe a computer that has allied with me should even be willing to give tech, at least if it sees a need for it (for example, if we are losing a war).

arwith me, but just stack hundreds of ships in such a sector. In one case there were 326 ships (from 3 AIs) around a single minor world, and that for about 20 years (not turns)

tting destroyed by other AIs or me within a short time after suing for peace because their ships are out of position.

Yeah, they make Phoenixes and Corvettes to fight my Avatars even tho they have Overlord tech

The tactical AI will be rewritten for GalCiv 2.  So we will be replacing these weaknesses with a whole new set.

That's great .

ould see the wisdom of boosting my ability to fight! Maybe the ai could lower its values on tech trades with allies or in times of war?

out or research them myself usually.

I usually wait until a minor has it and then it is more reasonable.

Well in Altarian Prophecy the AI was much more inclined to trade if you were allies.

put up a good fight for most of the game, though.

In my current game of AP I've noticed the AI sometimes protects it's systems with just colony ships. Pretty useless except to absorb some damage. Hopefully that will get fixed in GC II.

rvettes coming at me but few if any capital ships. IIRC this was a problem in straight GC I as well. Not sure why the AI "panics" and starts building these junk ships but it's a fatal decision IMO.

use Transports more than once or twice.....which is very handy because it means I can leave my military strength at very little or minor around all my planets and still be safe as long as I reinforce any starbases I have.

colony ships or a constructor is a bit crazy in the first place......

weakness of the ai is also the way it uses transports. Some send tons of them, some don't. In particular in the late game they never send enough troops.
