Universe At War
Did anyone ever play this? I was in the beta oh so long ago.. For some reason I took a look at their forums and it seemed that Petroglyph simply gave it up even though it could have been a huge success.

No GFWL killed UAW. The game is for all intents and purposes dead thanks to GFWL and Sega. It has great factions but the plot and multiplayer are lack luster at the top of their game.
At first I thought it was great. Then I bought it and realised that it wasn't....(Luckily it only cost me 8.8 euro)
Patch v.1.3 made the game perhaps crash (60% chance I reckon) after a game is completed which means you DON'T get your achievements!
All hotkeys are different which makes it nigh impossible to keep track of which hotkey was associated to which unit (and every ability must have its own hotkey....)
WHY didn't they make it like C&C 3 where all units got the same hotkeys..? Would have been so much simpler....
It hasn't crashed on me at all since I turned off DX10. They REALLY shouldn't have included DX10 at all, it's a pretty awesome game otherwise.
That said, two years later and I finally finished the Novus campaign. Why it took so long...I have no idea. I've been buying way too many games, really. Working on that though. ![]()
Every unit in your control group is selected at once. This is why they need different hotkeys: any ability your control group contains can be used without having to press Tab five times to subselect the unit type. That means that you need a lot of different buttons to make sure that you don't trigger all your abilities at once. You're probably used to the Blizzzard model of conflating "obtuse interface" with "complex game". None of Blizzard's interface-bloat fetishes are present, which is understandably disorienting given that stealing Blizzard's bad ideas is all the RTS market does anymore.
So really, the issue is that it's BETTER than C&C, but only for players with decent memories.
Blizzards WarCraft III interface is absolutely superior if you ask me. UaW got Smartcast though.
The solution would be that the same hotkeys can be used for every faction (F.e if Novus hacker had z as hotkey for shutting down enemies then Hierarchys radar unit could have scan on z too).
I agree. +1
I was in the Beta for this game, and purchased it on release. SP is pretty good but MP is dead thanks to GFWL :/ - Petroglyph hasn't been very active talking about the game, their forum for it has been dead since before release and the GFWL forum for it (Well, the XB360 forum) isn't too active either. It had lots of potential but lost steam too quick out of the gate.
I got it as a gift soon after it came out. From what I recall the main menu did not support the mouse. I got to the third campaign and then didn't play any more. I played a little more last year after I GFWL became free to play games over it. It was a hassle setting up a GFWL account and they still had the a and b buttons on the GFWL menus(did they ever change that?). I had very hard time figuring out why I couldn't connect to GFWL, then I found out it was because I was running XFire(not joking, when I closed XFire, Universe at War could connect to GFWL and not before).
Of course, my campaign progress was gone, I think it may be required to be logged into GFWL to save it(never bothered to find out). I played one or two games singleplayer then quit and uninstalled.
I never got around to playing multiplayer.
I have to wonder what would have happened if Stardock had been the publisher(or just a better publisher in general).
No LAN option killed it for me.
Yes, GfWL got a major overhaul and mostly makes sense now. And the multiplayer is free. If both of those had been true when UaW launched, the community might still be there...but alas, too late for that now.
