Survey #3: A compilation

Survey #3: A compilation

Hey all!

For Survey number 3, I thought we might do a compilation of questions that you all want asked! Just FYI, the surveymonkey will allow multiple choice single answer, multiple choice multiple answer, ranking, or score scaling. (It will also allow essay answers, but those are too hard to share the results with everyone). So provide me with the questions you would like included on the survey. If it is multiple choice, provide me with the choices. I will also credit you in the survey if your question is included. I will probably limit it to 10 or so questions, and if I have more quality questions save them for survey #4.

I would prefer that you PM me with your questions, not because I am a control freak, but if you post them here, it is likely going to derail and we will have a dozen debates in one thread going on. If you DO want to post them here, I would please ask anyone that wants to comment to start a separate thread about the topic. I will keep this thread bumped so that everyone sees it. Cutoff will be Thursday night as I will be creating the survey on Friday.

I also reserve the right to modify the question for clarity, and may add other options to the multiple choices etc. Also there is a pretty short limitation to how long the answer choices can be - so I may need to elaborate on the choices in the body of the question and then have the condensed version in the answer section.

Also, of course, anyone wanting to do a survey themselves can go to surveymonkey.com, sign up for an account, and do their own survey. I just thought this week it would be fun to do this. So maybe you want to do a similar question that I have done in the past but I didn't include an option that you liked. Or maybe a completely new question. Whatever you like, just PM me before Thursday and I will pick the top ten for this coming Friday's survey. Have fun!

Looks good, except for one thing: "Aether" is a planet in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (It'll be in my Metroid Mod, which, by the way, will be VERY high-quality and should be downloaded as soon ats it is finished......). "Ether" is the fith element that is the sum of the other four.

Also, it might be good to do this question twice: one as "How many elements are there", and once as "How many elements SHOULD there be".

How many Elements are there?

A. Five: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Life

B. Four: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water (with Life as either Aether or the Sum of the Four)

C. Six: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Life, and Death (the 'Life' rune describes an Element with two separate aspects)

Scoutdog, Darkodinplus, please suggest edits here to help avoid any unconscious push-poll wording on my part. The order of choices is because my past work writing questions (I've done a fair bit) tended to use alphabetical order for answer sets.

I can set up the poll to randomly order the choices for each person who takes it. You want that? It seems like the wording is pretty good and neutral to me, also.

I know nothing of Metroid stuff and did not mean any reference to it. Aether is the more traditional spelling for the alchemical thing you want discussed, while ether is also the name of the first widely-used modern anaesthetic. I'd suggest that Denryu stick with Aeather, and also feel free to make any or all wording/format changes he likes because he's the 'owner' of this interesting little project.

As to your idea of asking "How many SHOULD there be," to me that begs yet another follow-up question: "Do you think the devs would change the number of Elements in their current plan based on a strong majority opinion from the very small crew of forum-followers?" I'd kind of prefer them to stick to their plan even if I'm mistaken in my current guessing about it. Too many cooks spoiling the stew and all that...

The wording looks good to me GW. I'm personally inclined to think there are 5 magical forces with 1 splitting into two equal but opposite elements. I would also find six just as good but 4 would seem a bit stunted to me. (On a side note does anyone know if they are going to throw lightning under wind or is it absent in the current model)

I have heard nothing about lightening, but I always thought of it going under fire.... no idea why.

Well, lighting does burn...never quite understood the 'immunity to fire' traits not covering to some extent 'immunity to lighting'...at least it should partly cover it.  I do get that there is additional damage to electrical systems (like our bodies) that fire doesn't do.

The problem is that in theory, everything is composed of the four elements in different proportions (lets forgets about life/death now...). So I would say that a protection from fire would only work against things strongly aligned with that element. Then we could discuss about why someone inmune to fire should get only partial damage from a lighting attack.

Doesn't ice, in concrete circumstances, "burn" too? (Well, for the brain the feedback from the nerves is the same)

Well heat and cold are like brothers the same way with magnetism and electricity or mass and energy. They actually cause damage in different ways and I personally never really agreed with the term "frost burn". Heat causes damage by tearing molecular bonds or sub-atomic bonds if it is hot enough. Cold causes damage by stopping the movement or interaction of molecules or particles if it is cold enough. I suppose the feedback provided by the nervous system is similar however but then again how many different types of pain are there?

I personally am on for either 4 or 6  elements, just because 5 seems unbalanced (there is nothing to balance 'life', so it seems it covers more ground than the 4 primary elements)

Ahem, aren't we supposed to keep these discussions out of this thread? :P

no, he just didn't want people to post their question in the thread, then cry because he didn't include it in the survey.   He doesn't want to have to pick through the thread to find the questions.

Actually I did ask for discussions about any questions to please start another thread on it, but the survey is live now, so no worries!

I figured if that was in the case where it might start to cover up the point of the thread.  but like you said, oh well.  survey is live.
