{utility release} GUI for convertdata to automate the conversion of files in folders between BIN & TXT

{utility release} GUI for convertdata to automate the conversion of files in folders between BIN & TXT

harpos TXT BINner *v1.19.12* as at 15/3/2010

I have started coding on another little program for automated conversion of files between txt & bin formats using the actual convertdata*.exe's and the correct convertdata for the files based on the pathname eg for entrenchment mods/reference files the path should contain "entrenchment" ditto for the next expansions, and for vanilla sins it SHOULD NOT contain any of the expansions names also it will work on all drives in the computer BUT does need the sins installation in the location pointed to by the registy.

it will also be able to make TXTed reference files as easily as converting an entire mod to/from bin

to make your own reference set you first COPY the program files sins folder to another location in the computer like for example 'my documents', then delete FROM THE COPY the appdata, font & sdplugins folders and the dll and exe files in the root of the copy then run the txt binner doing the entrenchment folder first then any other expansions you have and finally the vanilla sins and for each folder note which files have FAILED conversion

a more detailed overview of the program

psudo code outline

get the conversion type

get the location to convert

determine which convertdata to use based on the location (all three expansions will be supported)

scan the location to create a list of all files

for each file in the list use the convertdata to convert each file if it is NOT the type wanted, then test to see if it was converted correctly, if not list it in the failed conversion list, if it was  then list it in the success list

end psudo code outline

note additional minor feature if you have a location you want to use as a sins reference files location and want it to be accessably with a single button then create a sinsref.txt in the same folder as the txt binner.exe and have as the first line of the file as the path to your sins reference location eg 'f:\sins reference'  note the LACK of trailing backslash the program does not want it

the new versions of the mod updater and TXT BIN GUI use the correct version of the convertdata to do the actual convesion to text/bin eg updateing mods from entrenchment 1.01 to 1.03 the mod updater converts to text with convertdata_entrenchment1.01.exe and updates the entities, then converts back to bin with convertdata_entrenchment 1.03.exe.

I suggest not using the old version files the current is 1.1

the latest version is included in the utility pack that an be downloaded from my mod updater thread

Can someone please tell me how to convert the entity files to text files?

I have no idea how to use the .exe files provided in the download.

Can someone give me advice, please?

By  THREAD LINK

i got tired of seeing requests for copies of the latet version reference files, even with my textbin gui in the field.

so here is the latest version references

sins 1.191

entrenchment 1.051

diplomacy 1.011

all the sounds, movies, textures and exe's other than the convertdata's have been removed, and all files have been converted to text mode by the latest version of my textbin gui.

thanks myfist0, it amazing how many people can not READ what they see, admittedly the forum system could be improved by the read frequency keeping them toward the top instead of the post frequency, but I guess it is easier for the forum coder to code the post frequency.

This forum needs a freaking SEARCH FUNCTION! If i see yet another "how do i do this" topic again. When someone else asked the same question 2 topics down...

Well guys, in my experience, you could have the topic as the number 1 sticky or pinned and they will just hit new topic and post away.

Some other forums I've been on the people get mad and type...

READ THE DAMN STICKYS and they come back "Ahh, wats a stiky?"

Probably this is going to be noob question but.....

I'm trying to convert from BIN to TXT for mod 7DS that is installed in

....\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.051\7DS 2.5 ALPHA H

Now when i run your sinstextbinner.exe program and select whole mesh folder to convert into TXT (some of files are already in txt .... but program should just skip them .... right??) program shows message

convertdata not found for expansion choosen......

There indeed isn't a ConvertData_Entrenchment1.051.exe file in your latest bundle (1.3 release)

Does that mean I  cannot convert those files with your program or is there a work around???

Would it worked if I just renamed my folder where mesh files are to entrenchment1.05 and run program or/and where can I download ConvertData_Entrenchment1.051.exe

Thank you for your reply

Ditto. Plus if we could get relevant topics stickied versus the sorely outdated ones....

Got it. I will see what I can do. Give me a bit.

Download ConvertData-7DS and extract the folder anywhere like your desktop.

Copy the files from the mod you want converted to your ConvertData-7DS folder. If they are mesh files then double click MeshBIN-2-TXT_7DS. Do the same for other file types using the appropriate bat file.

The mesh you sent is converted.   Do not release any of there work without permission!

Dont forget to thank harpo for supplying the ConvertData_Entrenchment1.041.exe

actually the latest set of files is in my modding utilities pack over in the mod updater thread with the current version being 191+e+d

and the convertdata's ARE from ironclad games, I just re-named them so that the version numbers would be available with the mod updater as I found by experiment that newer convertdata's can mis-convert( and crash) older files(from previous versions)

To many old files still available. Very confusing for anyone.

I would edit the main posts on these threads pointing to 1 file set with instructions.

As for the converters, thanks a lot for keeping and sharing them. Very handy

ok myfist, I have edited the OP and put a link to the mod updater thread instead of the link to downloads

and I have also kept entire sets of the game files from MOST of the release versions, and regards the converters, my utilities( in particular the mod updater) NEEDED them which is why I asked for permission to package & re-distribute and include them in the modding utilities packs.

This is not working for me. Im on Win 7 64bit.

Its funny, I could do it on win Xp 64bit, but now I cant. Anyone can help?

I put my files in the Mods directory, when I press Convert, the whole thing appears to be loading but nothings happening.

shuazoid, I do test on win 7 64 bit ultimate and have no problems.

have you extracted ALL the files in my utility pack into the same folder including the convertdata's AND the msvc?80.dll's and microsoft.vc80.crt.manifest and the ocx's?

had an issue (do not know exactly what) where the gui would not use the convert 's , BUT was waiting for them to finish running, so apprently locking up, Ierated the exe from the source, and tested on xp32, 7 32 and 7 64bit and the latest set runs as it should

and here is the link to the 22 feb 2012 text bin gui archive with all needed convertdata's and the correct targetsinsver.txt

and the latest sinstextbin gui exe and for those that want to have an older but reliable version on hand here is the 1.181 text bin gui exe which will work the latest targetsinsver.txt and convertdata's
