I just have to take my hat off to SD. The internal debates made external thread in the Dev journals was both pure genius and a nice treat for the fanbase. In case you missed it - https://forums.elementalgame.com/352821

I have been involved in a few betas and a ton of pre-release forums. This is a first, where they threw some ideas out to the community and asked for feedback. Just a day or so later, and it is the most posted thread by far. Giving some initial ideas and then letting the community brainstorm, and being involved at that level was at least as good or better than playing the beta imho. And I am betting it generated a lot of good ideas that SD can pick and choose from. I just think it shows so much confidence and down to earth coolness on SD's part to do that - so many developers are complete control freaks, the program is "their baby" and while they welcome ooohs and aaahs they really are not so open to suggestions, they have this Grand Vision that they don't want to deviate from one iota.

So I just wanted to say thanks to the folks at SD, that was absolutely awesome and I hope we have more discussions like the one yesterday. I am so happy I am not even going to bug you guys for details about the magic system this post. :X

Better then Beta?  No.  In a Beta you get to experence the issue and then with enough info make an informed choice.  In this case we heard a short summary of what was being discussed and got to weigh in on it.

Other then that I agree.  I think it is great that SD let us in on a discussion they were having and let us attempt to influence the end result.

I agree with the original post but disagree with the title of the thread. I'd say that both as equally important in their own way. But that's just me.

OK guys, I am not downplaying my desire for beta AT ALL. I have just done beta before and the level of interaction that we had with the devs in the dev journal yesterday was simply outstanding. That's all I'm saying.

I sure as HECK am not trying to encourage them to delay beta or anything STOOPID like that! :dur:

Defintly alot of good points all around...it's nice to go from two opposing fronts on the topic to a single vision that has everyone (internally, at least) really excited.

Actually I think the best thing about the whole deal is we're getting almost daily communication from SD about some facet of the game.  I know there's a fine balance between telling too much about a game to take away from all the suspense and being completely inncommunicado.  Personally I just like the fact that we almost always hear SOMETHING about the game most days.  The fact that as often as not its the CEO of the company is delicious sugary frosting on the cake

I was just telling my wife that this is the first time I will play a game and that I will pretty much know how it got to the final release. I've been on the forum since it started and I can tell you this is so much fun and so dang interesting to see step by step the game progressing.

 

Hats off to Stardock, you guys are really different from the others. They should copy you!!!
