Resources and their Uses / Upgrades

Resources

This topic is to provide Stardock with suggestions for resources and creative ways each resource can be used.  Each Resource should have at least two uses which increases its value and the games strategic depth.  Ideally I hope we also have the option to add/change/remove resources via modding tools.  Any resource can be traded... so I did not include this since it's obvious.

ORIGINAL RESOURCES:

1) IRON/BRONZE/COPPER

USES:  Magnets, Golems, Weapons(Swords, Maces, Etc.,), Siege Devices(Battering Rams, Etc.,)

2) CRYSTALS

USES:  Potions, Crystal Balls, Portal Structures, and some Spells

3) HORSES (and other mountable creatures)

USES:  Mounting Soldiers, Improved Caravan Movement, Mounting Scouts, Improved Agriculture

4) CROPS(Food, Fruit, Vegetables)

USES:  Maintaining the Health and Happiness of Population and also increases Prestige(Influence)

5) WOOD

USES:  Building Construction, BlackSmith Furnaces, Weapons(Arrows, Wooden Stakes, Etc.,), Siege Devices(Catapults, Etc.,).

6) SILVER

USES:  Traded for Currency(Flexing Price), Weapons(special against certain creatures such as werewolves), some Item Forging(Mirror, etc.,) and some Spells

7) STONE/ROCK

USES:  Building Construction, Walls & Bridges, Ammo for Siege Weapons(Such as Catapults & Lithobolos), Improved Roads, Statues, and Golems.

8) FRESH WATER (Not Sea Water)

USES:  Potions, Improved Agriculture/Farming, Holy Water, Medicines, and some Spells

9) HERBS/INGREDIENTS (Mandrake Root, Mushrooms, Salt, NightShade, Bat_Wings, Etc.,)

USES:  Potions, Medicines, and Spells

10) METEORITE(UnNatural Resource with Unique Properties)

11) VIRGINS

12) GEMS (RUBIES, SAPPHIRES, EMERALDS, DIAMONDS)

Dont forget slaves, beasts & salvage since you went the virgin route.

Human, fallen, dragon, bear, horses, fairy, shark & ANY unit are all resources & should be tradable.  ALL of them can be used as mount or as component used to assemble units (as allowed in Beastiary)

For example, a Bear should have the ability to "Carry 250 pounds".

A Fallen Fighter (140 pound) + equipment (70 pound) should be able to ride the bear and become the Fallen Bear Calvary unit (as allowed in Beastiary)

I think a whole host of monsters and beasts that can be captured would be a very appealing element, each one with their own uses.  This can either be done with a powerful spell or by units you could recruit from a "forester's" guild or enchanter's guild.  Some beasts may be a one time injection of a unique resource into your empire, and perhaps some will be breedable if you capture enough.

For instance, you could send your soldiers out to slay a pack of dire wolves and come back with a few captured wolves. as well as some dire wolf pups if you happen to have the right "taming unit" or taming spell active during your victory.  These wolves can be mounted and sent into battle as robust cavalry.  Perhaps you are able to charm ogres and haul them back to your capital, giving you a construction rate bonus or (in times of war) menacing battering rams.  And of course, I think you should on that rare occassion defeat a ravaging dragon and come across her clutch of eggs.

At any rate, I don't think it should be easy or too common to tame exotic beasts or animals.  In most cases, it might even simply be incidental.

11) VIRGINS

...Well i guess we have to keep smaug a happy dragon, aye?

Let's genericize "slaves" and "virgins" into "population" as a resource with multiple applications and aspects.  It could be nice to have multiple population types:

  1. Nobility
  2. Merchants
  3. Yeomen (free farmers)
  4. Slaves (serfs = slave farmers for this purpose)

Even just categorizing as "free" or "slaves" could be cool.  As posted elsewhere, I'm all for having an "Oppressometer" as well.

oh no!   I'v run out of virgins!

Bears should be in the OP list XD     Frogboy made a mention of a particular kind of crystal in one of his posts.  Giving theory that there may be different kinds of crystals and gems.

I personally want to make sure all the classic resources from MoM are present.   Mithral, adamantine, diamond....  I can't think of any others right now, but there are some.

Actually, I think Brad was talking about elemental shards. From my understanding, they are some kind of mana (maybe even essence?) node, as opposed to a "resource" in the conventional sense.

You RAN OUT OF VIRGINS. That's....... actually quite remarkeble. Also, why so much stuff about bears? I for one think that five-foot-tall wild dogs would be MUCH cooler. In any event, "Bear Calvalry" would actually be called "ursary", which sounds like something dreamed up by a guy who ran out of virgins, so lets just stick to horses. (Actually, I think "cavalry" sounds a tad obscene as well.... do I just have a dirty mind?)

Bear cavalry with virgin amazon warriors riding them?  Anyone?  Anyone?

No thanks, I don't want Stardock to get involved with those people.

Now, before this thread gets derailed completely, I want to consider the fact that metal is not what comes out of the ground in a mine: you get ore, which looks and acts pretty much like a rock until you refine & smelt it. The question is, should the player have to deal with the smaelting process, or just have it done automatically @ the mine? Guess it all comes down to the age-old complexity debate.

And I still think that giant dog cavalry is cooler than bears.

Good point re: ore.  I wouldn't mind the additional complexity, as the same ore could result in better or worse quality of iron or steel.  Which I guess brings up another question: will we start off using bronze or iron?

Considering what Brad said about steel-armored units being a late-game feature, my bet would be on bronze, but it could go either way.
