Lets talk about Accountability

Lets talk about Accountability

Accountability is defined as "A is accountable to B when A is obliged to inform B about A’s (past or future) actions and decisions, to justify them, and to suffer punishment in the case of eventual misconduct"

  • or more simply; "The obligation to demonstrate and take responsibility for performance in light of agreed expectations"

If you follow the forums at all, then you have probably already guessed that this leading to a discussion about Rage Quitting. It seems that people are often confused or unfamiliar with the term, so I will provide the definition. Keep in mind, these definitions have been in place since as late as 2006

The Urban Dictionary defines rage quitting as follows:

Rage quit

  • Usually used in online video games when a player gets killed so many times that he yells or "rages" at the computer monitor, which is usually followed by an alt+F4 or a "User has disconnected"

*Bane gets killed by random kid over and over*
Bane: OMG! THAT GUY IS SUCH A LAGGER! THATS IT! I'M DONE WITH THIS DAMN GAME!
            *alt+F4*

  • To part the server or channel maliciously and in a childish manner
  • To quit with frustration before the final conclusion.

Now, those of us who have played DOTA are all to familiar with the above scenario's. You start a game, someone dies once, they leave and now the remaining players must expend extra effort and energy to finish the game, or worse, the game devolves into a race to see who can exit the game the fastest.

Not only does this ruin games, but in a lot of ways it confirms to people that "hey, it's ok to be a self serving douche, it's the internet". It's not ok, just because you get away with it, doesn't make it right, fair, or ethical to other users. From what I have read about Stardock, and what I have observed in Frogboy, I know this is not the kind of community they want to foster.

Unfortunately this same childish, anti-social act, known as Rage Quitting is spreading like wildfire through Demigod as well, and it is ruining games.

It is often argued that players should not have to finish a game if they do not feel like it, that "we can do what we want, we paid our 40 dollars too!" or "I'm too busy in my insert _____(life/family/job) to be bothered to show you any courtesy or respect", the former being true and the latter being a shallow excuse.

And this brings us to accountability.

  1. What constitutes a Rage Quit in Demigod?
  2. How do we identify a player as a Rage Quitter?
  3. How do we deal with people who have a proven track record of Rage Quitting?
  4. How do we reward players who finish games to completion?

The banlist is a start.  And I have faith that Stardock will help us out as well.

stardock and GPG need to work on making DemiGod's multiplayer much more robust than it is right now.

that way, the players that want to get better and have a good time can better avoid leavers and the like (or take advantage of their stupidity), because people who chain leave will have bad rankings and people who don't will be able to play against each other more often.

Everything you say about rage quitting and accountability and all your little professional ideas with support etc. Means jack Shit,  There will always be rage quitters, STFU about RAge quitters and move on with your life.
Thanks for posting Jdub, you have given an excellent example of the type of people most Demigod players do not want to be forced to play with and provided a good case for the need of personal banlists supported by Stardock.

I dont ever quit unless im being harassed verbally by another player, Since there isn't a mute function available.

Im just saying, every thread on this forum is people like you bitching and crying about banlists and rage quitters.  Grow up, its a game, learn to cope with adversity.  Most People can't  Break out of the clouds bro Jeez just be happy and enjoy yourself.

Maybe its a 21st century thing everyone gets so wound up over games,  Go play in the MLG since you're so serious.  :P

I'll be happy and enjoying myself when I can play a game to completetion without leavers. The problem is, rage quitting happens in almost every game, it's not as if I can just hop in another game if I encounter a rage quitter.

They are a plague on the community, most of them displaying the very flippant attitude you have expressed here.

Humm, Trav, the only problm is most people are having problems with the disconnect crap. Since the connections are still not the most stable things.

If stardock maintain the ratios they can re-set them when they fix up the connection issues.

If the connection issues are not fixable and effect some people worse than others then it's crap and unfair to the people who are unable to stay in games for long, but they still should be marked out so that those of us who don't suffer connection problems can play the game.

Yes, you can right now, but it's a good thing you brought it up. Stardock can now take this into consideration. And I feel they should.

I think some of the major causes of this type of in-game quitting as now is simply re-rolling the dice. I played 3v3 Fortress on Cat 3 times in a row in Skirmish. Considering it takes around 20-30 minutes for me to get a game, I was very tempted to quit when it came up for the third time because I was sick and tired of it. I didn't, however.

Another reason is because frankly some players don't like to lose. Ever. They quit the moment something doesn't go their way. This isn't really an issue in games where players can leave and join as they want, such as Quake, Unreal Tournament and Counter-Strike, however in a game like Demigod it creates problems for all involved. And it's further cemented with the connection issues Demigod has experienced.

As part of a solution, Pantheon and Skirmish games should also connect to a lobby with a 30 second timer before launching. This gives people time to say 'Ok, don't want to play this map/mode' and leave, which would pauses the timer until the system pulls in another player(s) and then launch.
Also, in my opinion, highlighting a player in a game Lobby should show their win/loss/disconnect/karma stats at least. Once the connection issues are ironed out, these stats need to be re-set so that it's a fair indication on their game behaviour which should help people indentify players prone to this type of behaviour.
Lastly, and this is the largest, something needs to be added/taken to the actual game itself that allows players on the losing side to stage some kind of late game comeback that doesn't rely on the other side making mistakes. This will encourage people to at least try and finish a game, not quit the moment they think they're going to lose.

I hardly ever have leavers in the games I join or play.  I don't know if you're playing pantheon or skirmish or what.

I just told you I never leave how do I have a 'rage quitter' attitude.

Im telling you to get over yourself like you're the only one on the internet whose time is important.

Its not really a problem. people get frustrated and leave, get over it.  Oh Noes every game someone leaves, so what.  I always hope its on my team so I won't have to hear the enemy complain.  And 90% of the time we win...imagine what a little elbow grease will do if you stop coming online and posting about this 'issue' instead of adapting to it.  I don't know how we can evolve as a race if we cry over video games instead of finding a new way to adapt and overcome this insurmountable obstacle!

+1 karma.  This is really useful information.  I've been wanting to change my name to my alternate for a while now(Doggiedoodle here in case it changes the forum handle as well).

I'm not going to argue the same point in two threads.  However I will say a banlist for something that the community isn't even clear on the definition of is a really bad idea.

Actually, everything about your attitude suggests that you would bail on a game, so pardon the assumption. Maybe it's its the excessivly aggresive nature of your posts combined with that I don't give a fuck tude.

I think you actually care more than you let on, and I would bet the farm that you are a sore loser.

Where are you playing?  I play mostly Pantheon and Skirmish, and I can only think of two occasions where I definitely saw someone quit way too early in the game.  There may be cases that I forgot or mistook for a disconnect, so maybe make it five.  Stats are screwed up, so I don't know the exact number, but I've played several dozen rounds since the game came out.  Less than one game in six is hardly what I'd call a "plague".  On the other thread DalzK claimed that he hasn't seen this behavior in custom either, and I have no reason to disbelieve him.
