LOL . How did homosexuality become the topic? Some people are way too easy to be offended.

This forum is really embarassing, compared to pretty much all the other forums I've been in (im not really a big blizzard forum goer, I've heard they are bad also.)

Don't say it's a large community thing. TF2's forum is much nicer than this and the community is HUGE. lots of people need to grow the heck up around here.

Kyro, thank you for your semi-moderating of these forums. It is much appreciated (seriously). But, do you have any idea what reputation these forums are getting by the outragous derogatory comments that you guys give "shoulder shrugs" to? I know that you want to allow "free speech" ect, and that your main job is not to "moderate" forums, but, come one, if that was a black/jewish\women comment, you would have banned the guy for sure, But it's just about "gays" right, so no big deal, so here's our oblibitory verbal slap on the wrist. It's has nothing to do with blacks, jews, or women, it's just "faggots" so no big deal . . .

Jdub also semi-apologized. But pretty much anyone who is not an obvious spambot or criminal will get at least one warning to shape up for an offense. The action-oriented nature of Demigod is likely to attract a lot of younger people, and we can't simply ban them all the instant they say something offensive that they thought would make them look tough or cool, with no warning.

We do have a number of openly gay people who are well known and respected members of our communities, and slurs or derogatory comments disparaging them are no less serious than any other group. However at the end of the day they are still only "words" (no matter how offensive), and those who use them can learn to change and should at least be given a chance to do so.

If you see others using such language, please exercise the report post function and they will be warned against continuing to use such language as well. We are currently planning to implement some forum functions that will make it easier to track and deal appropriately with repeat offenders.

Why can't they at least just add a "squelch" feature if someone's being a trash-talking bitch over chat?

In other online RTS games, I could either set an annoying player on ignore, or (if the twit's an ally) TK him for being a whiny coont.

Wtf, why did that "fag***" phrase repeat itself in the quote?

You could temp-ban them for a few days.  People usually get the message quickly after that.

As a final closing statement.  I'm sorry my wording was off, I was upset because I felt I was being harassed by my own team-mate for no reason.  so for some reason I decided to let everyone know I had a "dota" experience, or so i felt.

I apologize to 'Invictus' in here, and in a pm.

sorry fellows ( and to anyone else who I may have offended )

Oh, I have a "pair" Chaosnaska, and your just about to find out how big a pair.

Kyro: Actions > Words.  The "Gaymers" are watching how you handle this; expecially peopel like Chaosnaska.  Like it or not, your the "sherrif" in this little online community, and it just seem like your letting a few bad apples kick sand in everyones face (including yours and SDs).  You say "they are still only words", well, erm, I'm possitive if those words were about blacks/jews/women, you take MUCH stonger action; especially if YOU had a son, brother, or close friend that was gay.

As for Jdub, I/we are impresed with his appology, I think it takes courage to do that, thank you Jdud. That's all we are looking for, to educate people to not use hurtful/bigoted laungage.  I just hope you'll consider using more "generic" terms when your upset; even throwing the F-bomb is better then using derogitory, group specific words.

Thanks Sorcerous, I was thinking after I made that post, I'd have to run out of the forum dodging thrown rocks on the way.

I have 2 gay friends; one a retired sherrif with lots of awards/medals, and anouther whos in his early twents.  You have NO idea how much it hurts them to go online to relax, try to get an escape from their troubles for a while, and try to play a MP game, only to see a slew of "gay, homo, fag, queer".  I've been in the same room with them when it happens, and it looks like someone just punched them in the gut every time.  It really needs to stop, espeially since suicides of 13-18 year olds are WAY up due to people calling such names online (often towards kids that are NOT even gay).

I think the moral of the story here is that all online games need some sort of mute button.

To sum up what he just said: Grow a pair.

That's hardly the case and you know it.

I've already had to warn you about language use before--regardless what you may think, it doesn't make you cool. Knock off the inflammatory "translations" or I'll do it for you with a free three-day vacation from the forums. This isn't 4chan and "for the lulz" isn't going to fly as an excuse here.

PurplePaladin, Jdub's apology and better restraint in the future is a much more positive (if not the best possible) outcome here. I'd hazard to say that an immediate ban/tempban without warning would (in this and similar cases) only have fed the underlying frustration and caused further alienation, rather than reconciliation. But here, we've achieved the best possible outcome without resorting to that.

It's very much similar to solving a situation with reason rather than force; a reasonable person who understands the problem (and why it is a problem) is going to be much less likely to repeat the offense than one who is summarily punished without ever being told that such behavior was unacceptable here.

Basically, my reasoning here is that anyone deserves at least one chance at redemption. Zero-tolerance policies are a horrible and ineffective way to control behavior when reason is an option.

In any case, I think this thread has lived well beyond its usefulness. Jdub has withdrawn and apologized for his comments disparaging homosexuals and the mentally handicapped. If anyone wants to discuss moderation policy further, Brad's journal on community is a good place to do that.

I agree Kyro, that's why I thanked the OP for his apology; it was the perfect outcome as far as I'm concered.  I just felt I had to say SOMETHING, because so many simular posts on these fourms just seem to be ignored.  And if "I" write something (due to no responce from SD", then it a flame war (lutz used as an excuse).

And ftr, there is a "Gaymers.com", and many other websites/groups that watch out for anti-gay situations like this; anybody familar with what WoW/Blizzard did when this situation came up knows the sledgehammer of outrage that can happen if the people in control don't nip things in the bud.
